Yanzhi cloaked everyone there with his qi as soon as Xiao Ling's sinister aura of death was released and running amok without any restraint. The people there would have been petrified and suffocate to death by the murky aura which was excluding from Xiao Ling, because they were much closer and were the most exposed to Xiao Ling.

They watched with dread as visible changes occured in Xiao Ling, it was a frightful sight for them who had never encountered such events. Even Yue and Liu who weren't humans were frightful and terrorized by the now Xiao Ling. He no longer seemed humane, and even to call him a demon was an understatement, what he was, was something terrifying and out of the world. They just had no words to describe the fear he instilled in them.
