Finally, we reached the cabin. The morning sky was no longer dark, but it was still earlier than most werewolves woke. Everything was as Jacques had informed us.

I could smell at least four separate werewolves, and there was the distinct odour of rogue, so at least we knew what, if not who, we were dealing with. The scent was definitely fresh as in within six hours, but that could be because they were inside sleeping.

What I did detect was a powerful metallic tang of blood. Someone had been bleeding. A lot. There was still some smoke coming out of the chimney, but it didn't look as if it had been left to die. The van with the number plates Michel had been following was parked outside. It was cold, so it had not been used recently.

With what I was seeing and smelling and no guard outside, I felt uneasy.

"Something is wrong," I said.
