“Are you okay?”
“Nature calls,” I said, leaving the table.
I stumbled through the living room, tripped on a toy, and dashed for the washroom. But the door was locked. Fay was in there. She’d be a while, she told me. I looked around and decided on Dayton’s home office. The kids were playing and everyone else was sitting at the table. No one would come looking for me for a while. I shut the door and fell into a chair. I needed to get out of this house. This act was doing me in. How could I sit there and keep pretending I wasn’t dying with every look he avoided?
Long minutes passed and to my great surprise, Davinder entered the office without a word, shutting the door behind him. He opened his mouth to speak.
“Hi,” I said angrily. “How are you?”
“I know, I know.”
“You do? No, I don’t think you know what it’s like for me tonight. As a matter of fact, I think you’re pretty fucking clueless to what I’m—”
“You think this is easy for me,” he said between clenched teeth. “You think—”
