He looked startled. “Me, sir? I don’t want—” He bit off the rest of his words as the color that had started to recede rose in his cheeks again.
“Sucking up to me isn’t going to get you in my good graces.”
“I don’t suck up, sir. I wasn’t raised that way.”
“No? Mind telling me how you were recruited to the WBIS?”
“Not by sucking up.” A shadow passed over his face so quickly I almost missed it, and then he blushed even harder. “I…uh…I hacked into the personnel files and bumped my application to the top of the list.”
I started to laugh. If there was one thing the WBIS appreciated, it was someone taking the initiative, especially if they were sneaky about it.
“All right. Next time, trust that I can get home on my own.”
“Yes, sir.”
“I’m serious.”
“Yes, sir.”
