The Pokemon that appeared on Barbara's side was her Decidueye, while I decided to go with Abyss/Gyarados. Since I had already revealed/used two of them, three if we counted Stan/Gyarados, I naturally had to use the other three members of the Sinister Six as well or they would feel bad about it.
Aby's appearance obviously caused a commotion due to her different look compared to a regular Gyarados. Well, it was mostly her coloration that was different on the visual front, but just like the others, she was much larger than normal as well at 13.5 meters, so that made an impact too.
The upper part of her scales was an Umbreon black, while her belly, or lower part, as well as the row of spots on the back, were a navy blue. Her barbels were a bit shorter than the regular ones, but I doubted anyone in the audience that did not deal with Gyarados would notice that.
They would however notice that the crest on her head while still three-pointed, looked slightly jagged and slightly longer as well. The white fins on each side and the ones on her back as well as tail looked mostly the same, they just seemed a bit more sharp/jagged and were grey instead of white.
Anyway, while Aby caused a commotion in the stands, her Intimidate ability did its work and well, intimidated Decidueye. She also executed her vicious opening move set, which was her using Taunt and Torment in rapid succession.
This limited her opponent to offensive moves and simultaneously prevented it from using the same move more than once in a certain period. With her current mastery that period lasted for 1 minute and 37 seconds.
Her opening move interrupted whatever move Decidueye was in the middle of performing and she used that opportunity to perform her only combo move Scary Snarl, attacking Decidueye while also lowering its speed as well as energy attacking capabilities.
Not willing to just let Aby do whatever she wants, Decidueye send out a volley of Razor Leaf, but Aby simply burned them to crisp with a Flamethrower. Seeing that, Decidueye decided that getting into the air was vital and took off at once.
While it was rising, Aby fired a Dark Pulse at it but it used Phantom Force to be intangible for a bit so her attack failed. That action bought it enough time to get properly airborne, and with its intangibility, it managed to theoretically bypass the restriction set by Taunt. I had to admit that, that was a pretty clever application of Phantom Force.
Anyway, seeing that she could not attack Decidueye while it was intangible, Aby chose to ignore it for a bit and used Nasty Plot to boost her energy potency. She then eyed Decidueye, and at the first hint that it returned to normal, she fired an Ice Beam at it.
Decidueye quickly fired a Shadow Ball at the incoming Ice Beam to stall it for a moment, buying it enough time to safely dodge the attack. Directly after it did that, it fired an Energy Ball at Aby, which she easily dodged.
What followed was Decidueye alternating between Air Slash, Energy Ball, Seed Bomb, and Razor Leaf, while dodging Aby's counterattacks, to deal with the 30 seconds cooldown forced upon it by Torment.
Aby dealt with the grass moves through Flamethrower and Air Slash with Ice Beam. She also kept them up a bit longer after dealing with Decidueye's moves, trying to hit it with them as well, but besides a few grazes here and there it managed to avoid most of the damage by using Phantom Force at critical junctures.
Aby made sure to force Decidueye's Phantom Force to cool down. She then reapplied both Taunt and Torment before the previous ones expired, killing any of Decidueye's hopes of using any auxiliary, support, or healing moves.
After she managed to nail Decidueye with a particularly well-aimed Flamethrower, causing it to be briefly unable to dodge due to pain, she hit it with another Scary Snarl, further reducing its speed. Well, and it's offense, but the speed reduction was the important bit.
After it slowed down, even more, dodging Aby's attacks became much harder, and the number of its successful dodges reduced drastically. Unfortunately, for Decidueye that is, Aby's last Ice Beam managed to freeze its wings, causing it to plummet towards the ground.
Abyss did not miss the opportunity and shot a Dark Pulse at it while it was falling. After it crashed onto the ground she rushed towards it but that proved to be in vain since Decidueye was already unconscious.
The referee declared Decidueye unable to battle and Abyss the winner, which meant I had won the battle. Meanwhile, Aby was actually pouting cause she did not get to finish her last action, but she stopped pouting when I praised her performance before I recalled her.
Barbara did the same with her Decidueye and I thanked her for the battle before I left the venue. I had now officially made it to the quarterfinals in the Pokemon battle category. A quick look at the streams/info on the fights showed that Hans's battle was still going on.
It was 10:07 a.m right now, and my personal battle was scheduled for 11:45 a.m, so I still had nearly 100 minutes before my fight. Moreover, the fight would happen here as well, so I found myself an empty seat in the stands and just watched the rest of Hans's battle.
Well, he ended up losing, even if it was a close thing with his Magnezone going down a few moments before his opponent's Scrafty. His loss meant that Diana, Brian, and I were the only ones that made it to the quarterfinals in the Pokemon battle category, at least from our continent.
I was curious how many of us three from the northern continent were going to qualify for the quarterfinals in personal combat after the round of 16 was over. It would be a bit sad for the northern continent if I ended up being the only one.
Anyway, after watching Hans lose his battle, I chose to look up the information on my next opponent to see what I had to deal with. According to the official website, I would be facing Jake Hill, who was representing the western continent and Galar.
The guy was a Tier 2 First-Class Grass Elementalist, that liked to use his plant manipulation to grow a pair of thorn whips that he could expertly use at long and mid-range.
He had also shown other ways to fight at all ranges, including close range, so he was pretty balanced all things considered. Still, from what I could see from the clips on his battles and other information I read, close combat seemed to be his weakest point.
Satisfied with what I found I took a look at my watch and saw that I had another 20 minutes before I had to head down onto the field, so I decided to finally deal with the Bidoof and Starly I had bought yesterday.
I chose to start with the 51 Bidoof, and the first thing I did was release them out of their respective Pokeballs one after the other so that they could go through Utopia's optimization process.
Utopia naturally created a habitat for them, which increased a bit in size after all 51 Bidoof were assigned there, but that was irrelevant since I was going to throw all of them into the subspace.
Well, someday in the future, when I decided that they had done enough at the subspace Bidoof farm, the habitat could be used by the Bidoof that ended up with light blue and blue potential after the optimization process. Until then it would just stay on the outskirts of Utopia along with the other empty habitats.
Out of the 51 Bidoof, 18 ended up with light yellow potential, 15 reached yellow, 7 acquired deep yellow, 4 gained light green, 3 upgraded to green, 2 ended up with deep green, 1 made it to light blue, and 1 even got his potential raised to blue. All in all, the optimization ended up giving me a pretty decent basis for my Bidoof farm.
Once everyone was done, I separated an area in the fauna subspace for the Bidoof that I adjusted just for them before I relocated them all there. After that, I repeated the same process with the Starly.
Just like with the Bidoof, the Starly habitat ended up in the outskirts as well, and I decided to resettle the two blue potential Starly there as well after I felt they had done enough inside the subspace to "retire" to the main space of Utopia.
Out of the 54 Starly, 21 upgraded to light yellow potential, 16 ended with yellow, 7 got deep yellow, 3 managed to reach light green, 4 reached green, 1 got boosted to deep green, and the last 2 actually had their potential raised to blue.
This was a pretty good basis for a Starly farm as well, and in a few years, when their number had risen to over 300, I would allow the Bidoof and Starly with good potential to retire.
Anyway, I relocated all Starly to the fauna subspace as well, once they had all gone through optimization, and I had separated/prepared their new habitat.
After I finished with all that, I took another look at the watch and saw that it was 11:39 a.m, so I stood up to head towards the field. As soon as I arrived at the gate, the staff let me walk onto the field and I heard the host starting the introductions as soon as I came out. Less than a minute later Jake showed up as well.
The referee spoke up and went over the rules before he gave the signal to start our battle. My first action was to send out a few senbons as a greeting gift, but Jake did something unexpected.
He used his right arm to block the senbons he could not dodge while throwing out a few seeds with his left hand before he made those grow into a big shrub wall.
A shrub was generally not the best wall to hide behind against projectiles, but Jake used the twigs and branches inside the shrub to block all senbons I threw at him. I also saw him pulling out the senbons logged inside his right arm before using grass energy from the shrub he grew to heal the wounds.
I decided against making it harder for myself and simply teleported a few meters behind Jake to throw some more senbons at him. Jake seemed to have expected something like that since he had moved some branches there which he used to block most of the senbons.
Yet, no matter how fast he reacted, the movement of the branches could not be as fast as my teleportation, so some senbons made it through and lodged onto his back or behind.
I then teleported a few more times to different positions to release some more volleys of senbons at Jake, who eventually decided to completely surround himself with a shrub dome. That way he finally managed to block all my senbons, effectively making them useless, at least for now.
I could still somewhat see what Jake was doing inside that shrub dome of his, and I saw him grow some flowers inside there. The reason why he did that, became obvious a few moments later when a cloud of powder began being released from the flowers.
The powder cloud wafted out of the shrub and began spreading out. I guess Jake had looked into my previous fights and had seen that I had some problems with clouds and smoke screens. However, that was only while I was trying to restrict myself to aura and my weapons, not when I was willing to use my psychic abilities as well.
I guess it was time to show Jake and everyone else that I did in fact have no such weakness, and that it had been a choice of mine to face the situations head-on instead of solving them the easy way.
