He Lanjin leaned against the wall lazily, playing with her fingers as she watched the commotion. She was also secretly watching Qiao Hanye's actions. Today, he appeared out of nowhere. It did not seem like he was here to freeload; it looked like he was here to cause trouble.
Suddenly, Qiao Hanye's spoon fell to the floor. The bureau chief turned to look at the source of the noise, accidentally bumping into He Ruoxue's bag.
"My bag," He Ruoxue said as the bag fell out of her hand. A file folder slipped out of the bag, causing Lu Zifan extreme shock. He strode forward to snatch it, but the bureau chief was one step ahead of him. The director picked the folder up and handed it to He Ruoxue.
"Thank you, Director Chen," He Ruoxue said with a bow. She did not realize that He Lanjin was here sharing a table with Lu Zifan because He Lanjin was sitting beside Qiao Hanye, whose tall figure obscured He Lanjin.
He Ruoxue reached out to get the folder from the director, but he suddenly withdrew his hand and opened the folder.
"No," He Ruoxue cried, completely stunned. Lu Zifan felt like his heart was going to explode with the desire to snatch the folder from the bureau chief. This was not how he envisioned this meeting to be. He had worked so hard to gain access to the secret of the He family.
Lu Zifan's only reason for being here was to meet He Ruoxue, who was bringing the information that he wanted. Now everything was ruined.
"Director Chen, this is mine." He Ruoxue stepped forward and snatched the folder away, not the least bit afraid of offending the director.
Director Chen saw how anxious He Ruoxue was, so he did not say anything. He threw Qiao Hanye a furtive glance before looking away. He Lanjin's smile deepened when she saw the look the bureau chief gave Qiao Hanye.
He Lanjin was amused. Qiao Hanye seemed to be better at playing games than she was. He had brought lawyers to write Lu Zifan's will, and now he was playing with Lu Zifan and He Ruoxue. He Lanjin felt that she and Qiao Hanye had the same goals; and if this were the case, then it would not matter which one of them made a move. As long as the goals were achieved, He Lanjin was happy.
"I know," Director Chen said.
He Ruoxue yanked the folder from the bureau chief's hand. Director Chen suddenly let go, and several sheets of paper scattered all over the floor. The lawyers very quickly picked them up.
"H Street Girls Recruitment. Timely compensation. The most beautiful and the best performers will receive additional commission. Candidate He Ruoxue," one of the lawyers said, reading the text out loud. His face red, the lawyer handed the paper back to He Ruoxue. "Do you perform well, Miss He?"
He Ruoxue was shocked. She could not believe what she heard and snatched the document from the lawyer. She was sure she put the right document in her bag. What was this recruitment letter doing in her bag?
Flipping through the stack of papers that the lawyers handed to her, He Ruoxue felt like she had been hit in the head. She was completely dumbfounded.
"Impossible," He Ruoxue blurted out, visibly dazed. "These weren't in my bag. What I had was the He family's..." Lu Zifan stepped forward and cut her short. "Xiaoxue, you're confused! Although the He family is currently in a financial crisis, you can't apply for this job!"
Lu Zifan's angry voice brought He Ruoxue back to her senses. She stopped talking, knowing that she almost blew Lu Zifan's cover.
Director Chen looked meaningfully at Lu Zifan, and then at He Ruoxue. He picked up the green bodysuit and the green hat that have fallen to the floor. "Since young Master Lu doesn't like the bureau's environmental protection uniform, I'll take my leave."
"As for that piece of land, I will leave it to someone who has integrity," Director Chen said before walking out of the hotel.
The bureau chief was gone when Lu Zifan recovered from the shock. Lu Zifan was going to chase the director, but He Ruoxue held him back by pulling his arm. "Brother Zifan," she cried pleadingly. "I swear I put the correct document in my bag. I don't know what happened."
He Ruoxue racked her brains, but she could not think of anyone who could have changed the document. Besides herself, Tang Zhilin and He Wenqing, there was no one else in the house. Who could have gone to her room while she was having a bath?
"Could Tang Zhilin or He Wenqing have done it? Are they starting to suspect me?" He Ruoxue wondered out loud.
Qiao Hanye elegantly wiped his fingertips with a handkerchief. He looked sideways at He Lanjin and raised his handsome eyebrows. "Your gaze clearly shows that you have taken a fancy to me," he said and took a sip of his wine.
