Side Chapter - Chase Part 1

[The streets were dark and gloomy, the oh so familiar sight of cars driving by, blinding me as I walked further. A sound of, what I would call, pain, filling my ears as I continued through the dark alleyways.] "Nothing like some noise to truly make the night worse." I told myself.

Stones and cans clattered about as the "vultures" of the alleyway scavenged around, looking for anything worthwhile. Indeed it was just like any other night. It was disgusting, seeing the failures around me scramble around, looking for anything that'd help them survive, some even coming to me with those horrendous begging eyes. Moonlight illuminated the area as I ignored them in their suffering. [Back to work] I'd think. [Why is it that my own life is so boring? Why is it that others should get to live peacefully while I, I have to work harder than anyone else?] It was quiet, with only the sound of my shoes hitting the pavement comforting me down the now empty roadside.

For what seemed like ages I continued onwards to my workplace. "Click-Clack, Click-Clack." The water beside me trembled as rain began to fall. [If only I had brought my umbrella with me.] Drenched and shivering in the cold I made my way forwards. Behind me my shadow trailed me and in a flash of light it disappeared. Reappearing only for short intervals of time as the city's temporary light illuminated the dreariness of life. Then, a sudden gust of wind caused my short, crimson red hair to cover my eyes as I suddenly bumped into an older man with kind looking eyes.

He turned to me and asked, "Are you alright? It's very cold out here."

"I'm fine. Now get out of my way." I said, pushing away my red hair from my hazel eyes.

"Listen here young man, it's not good to neglect your health. Here." He said passing over his midnight blue umbrella.

"I don't need it."

"Don't be so stubborn, I don't have much time left myself as an old man. So I'd rather someone so young stay in good health." He said with a tired, old smile. "Just remember to pass on the kindness one day."

And with that he passed me his umbrella, leaving as he tucked his head under his large, maroon coat.

"Tsk. If I have to take it I may as well." I muttered to myself. [Though it is a bit infuriating that he said 'so young', just because I'm short doesn't mean I'm young after all. But I digress, after all it was quite nice of him to give me his umbrella.]

[My target was before my very eyes! If it weren't for that old man! No, no I have to be patient. Without patience I can't be sure I'll be able to escape.] Thought a young man with black hair and average looks to himself.

[Nothing interesting ever happens in this god forsaken city. It's so damn boring. Everything, from social status to economic status stays the same. Life has become so mundane.] I thought as the rain continued to fall onto my white scarf and brown coat.

"Only three more miles." I told myself. "I wish I could just quit, at this point the night shift is becoming too much. Plus I'm almost always late anyway."

Sighing I could only continue, as a slave to society.

The young man with black hair could be seen rubbing his hands together sporadically. His black eyes darting around constantly behind a brick wall. [All I need is one, one opening to ensure I can get away with it! So if you would be so kind as to slip up that would be absolutely wonderful! These hands and this blade can't wait much longer! The bugs underneath my skin are crawling in anticipation, making my hairs stand on end! This feeling is just so delightful I can't help but laugh! But I must help it.]

Hearing what sounded like a laugh I stopped dead in my tracks, my black well-worn dress shoes clicking as they came to a halt. [It was probably my imagination.] I thought to myself. However, as of that moment I had a suspicion, a gut feeling that something, no someone was behind me. Checking my old imitation silver watch for the time I thought [What does it matter? No matter the reason it's not like work is just going to magically disappear, besides I need the money. Without it I'll be stuck out there in the alleyways with the other vermin.]

The rain began to lighten as the, previously occasional car was now nowhere near. The weathered cement buildings surroundings stood wearily, as if they would fall at any given moment. Failed and useless public installations took up empty space, perhaps some were once meant to honor someone, but nobody knew if they did. Walking through the labyrinth that was the city was truly tiresome. As if people had rarely walked down this path, the abundance of weeds and small creatures created minor obstacles. Sounds of mice scattering at every alley greeted me, as if saying "I'm not alone." [Despite the gloominess and dreariness of this mundane life of mine, sometimes, I guess, it's not so bad.] I thought to myself with the umbrella covering me. [Sometimes a walk to work can be nice.] Regardless I began to pick up my pace, the budget cuts of the city was especially annoying when working late.

[I could feel the darkness enveloping my figure as my gray trench coat fluttered in the wind. Lights out, as one would say, it was now that the city's lights turned off that I could finally begin! The time was ripe for picking as one would say. Is this revenge? No it's just a fun game of hide and seek! Yes, yes a dangerous game, one where I'll wake in the morning and resume my normal life. A normal life for a normal human like me.]

After around 3 days the two side chapters will be moved to the auxiliary volume.
