because then they would be making money off of someone else's work, but like i said if they are just trying to earn some money to support themselves by asking for donations while still actively posting it somewhere for free it would be completely legal

it is and is not illegal depending on how it's set up for instance if it's phrased as supporting the author instead of buying access to advanced chapters then it's completely legal since the author is not actually selling the chapters as long as they are actively posting the chapters for free somewhere however if the author focuses solely on sites that require you to pay for access for instance say patreon then that would be completely illegal
