He was obsessed with the emotions of humans, and wanted to "devour" them, experiencing them for himself. Spoiler territory here, but basically he lives among humans for a while, and what he does to them is very evil in nature, humans he had gotten to know for decades. Macht is one of the reasons Frieren avoided fighting Demons for hundreds of years
