That's probably because the population is a lot higher now. You don't think war itself is less common than it used to be? There was war across the entire world all the time before modern times. I can only think of what's happening in Israel/Palestine and Ukraine and Russia. There might be something less known and then others armed conflicts that aren't as grand in scale. Overall it is far more peaceful though. A quick google search confirms now is more peaceful than in our history.
