I do not know if it was ever explained, but I view the floating land origin as a type of material that is needed by all creatures of the Starry Sea. In particular, for Song Chi, it is used to level up his ship part with the corresponding floating land origin. (For example, if the MC was leveling up a lvl.60 part to lvl.61, he would need to use lvl.6 floating land origin.) Also, in the novel, it is explained that floating lands, depending on the level, produce floating land origin of the corresponding level and below; and occasionally floating land origin one level higher. (For example, a lvl.6 floating land will produce floating land origin of lvl.6 and below consistently while occasionally producing floating land origin of lvl.7.) Furthermore, naturally formed floating lands of a higher level i.e above lvl.6 are pretty rare in the Starry Sea; usually organizations will feed* their floating lands to induce upgrades; even so this is a lengthy process. Hopefully, this explains floating land origin. If there is anything incorrect in my comment, please let me know below.
