I love this story so far. The main issue I have that is causing me to drop it is that the character is unbelievably stupid/simping/stalkerish. It's almost physically painful reading what he's doing. I know some people will be fine with that, but for me, I can't handle that.

What you're describing is fear of change not fear of influence. according to the story as far as I know magic/being a shape-shifter is a part of you, your soul, you're innate being. So all you are doing is denying a part of yourself and attempting to cut it off and excise it. In the story you can obviously deny the bond just like when you go through hormones/puberty. So magic is no different.
