🤦 really? California City, a city of about 15k ~2 hrs from anything. Now the expectations of supermodels and luxury handbags makes no sense. Fantasy or Sci-fi allows for interesting cultural mashups/veneers. Magical realism shouldn’t lose my suspension of disbelief on the realism.

So it’s mostly the little things that make this subpar to terrible. California is a state not a city, and it’s really big with lots of differences across it. If you mean the L.A./Hollywood area as a caricature fine, BUT it does not rain there. The whole point of the area is it has no weather. Cops in the U. S. can get away with lots of stuff, but making a person transfer money out of electronic banking, nope. The setting makes the story less believable not more. It’s like saying all Midwest farming is rice paddies. Unless it’s addressed why culture mashing is happening, it’s just makes the story ungrounded.
