I know, the biggest hint being that the quest/mission wasn’t complete, which means there was more danger nearby. Also, the people said never to care about others with in the dream as they aren’t real. Or if you think they are real, then your survival matters more. It was well forshadowed. But what if the hero was being genuine? If the author wrote him to be an actual good person and they went their separate ways once the difficult situation was over. Then the hero would have been poisoned for no reason. The reason I say this is because I probably would have done most of the things that the hero did in this story. It is what it is.
