When Jake arrived, Eve was already there, sipping her drink and staring into the city skyline.
She looked composed, but her eyes were guarded, and Jake could see the tension in her posture. He sat across from her, feeling the weight of what he was about to say.
"Eve, we need to talk," Jake began, his voice steady but low.
"I know what you're going to say, Jake," Eve replied, not meeting his eyes. "It's about Laura, isn't it?"
Jake exhaled slowly. "Yes, but it's not just about her. This has been building for a while, and it's unfair to either of us to pretend it's not happening. I've been trying to convince myself that I'm ready to move on, to be with you—but the truth is, I'm not. My heart isn't in this, not because of anything you did. You've been amazing, but I can't keep leading you on."
Eve's expression hardened. "So, you're breaking off the engagement? Just like that?"
