The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

Mana Abuse

"Sick?" Goliath looked startled by this, "But how is that possible?"

"What?" I coughed out a few more sparks, "I'm not allowed to get sick."

"No," Goliath frowned, "I've just never heard of magical beasts getting ill."

He'd never heard of a magical beast getting sick.

"We should ask Savannah," I held back another cough, "She knows more about magic than I do. Maybe she knows something. What are we going to do until then?"

"Stay here," Goliath shut off the camera in the corner, "Relax, and try to recover in the meantime. Can't have you coughing out sparks when you leave."

I stood up, and pushed the desk up against the wall as Goliath left. Then I switched to my dragon form, and relaxed curled up in the center of the large office Goliath kept for himself. Coughing occasionally as that hot feeling slowly got worse. Reminded me of the time I got the flu. Back when I was human.

I'd stayed in my room for the better part of a week. I didn't even go out for food since I could barely keep down water at the time. It sucked. I hoped I wouldn't get that bad this time since I really hated how I felt when I missed meals. My tail twitched as I started to get bored.

I didn't feel like moving either. I debated on messaging Savannah but I didn't want to risk her running out of class, and drawing that much more attention. I'd probably already caused a stir by leaving class the way I had. I fell into another coughing fit. My lightning burned track marks into the floor.

Goliath was going to have to explain that to the people that repaired this place. My lightning breath was far more powerful than any of my other lightning abilities. I tried to stop my mana from flowing into my lungs, but my mana was affected by this illness more than the rest of me. The hotter I felt. The less I could control my inner mana flow.

I could still keep my mana in, but I couldn't do anything more than that. I tried creating a ball of lightning. It looked more like a spiked ball. My mana was trying to spread out. I let the ball of lightning to run out of power.

I kept coughing out lightning no matter how hard I tried to stop it. I dozed off, and lost track of time. Next thing I knew Savannah was kicking me in the head.

"What?" I growled.

It didn't hurt so I was mostly just irritated that she kicked me.

"Your mana flow is all messed up," Savannah was frowning down at me as I slowly raised my head, "Plus your fever. All the symptoms you have match up with mana abuse. The only thing that doesn't line up is the coughing, but I think that has something to do with the fact that you're a dragon. It takes some pretty unique lungs to breath elemental magic."

"Mana abuse?" I coughed out a few sparks while I was looking at her.

Goliath flinched, and looked concerned when the sparks hit her. Savannah on the other hand just brushed it all off. My magic wouldn't hurt her so she didn't care. Goliath just watched this interesting exchange.

"What's mana abuse?" I snorted lightning.

"It's also know as mana overuse," Savannah smacked my nose.

All she did was hurt her own hand since I didn't give like I normally would. She rubbed her hand gingerly.

"What have you been doing with all your mana?" Savannah dropped her hand as if nothing had happened, "You have to repeatedly empty your reserve completely for at least a week for something like this to happen."

"I thought I could just use my mana as much as I want," I felt my lip come up slightly, not enough to be a snarl, "It just regenerates."

"What happens when you over exorcise, and don't stop?" Savannah smirked.

My mana reserve worked like a muscle? It actually made a lot of sense. Stretching a reserve would force it to get bigger. Just like working your muscles would force them to get stronger. If you overdid it.

Then you could damage your muscles.

"I didn't know that I could overuse mana," I went into another coughing fit, "How long until I'm better?"

"It varies from species to species," Savannah shrugged, "I don't know about other magical species, but humans can be sick for two or three weeks. That's why we maintain a strict schedule. Two days working with mana, and one day off."

"Great," I frowned, "So we don't know how long I'll be coughing out elements." I looked at Goliath, "You think you can get me out of class for a few days?"

"I can try," Goliath frowned, "Chances aren't good though. Our medical ward can treat most illnesses, but we can't tell them what you're suffering from. They're unlikely to let you get out of class after refusing treatment."

"Even if it's something to strengthen my ability?" I held in a cough, "I included adaptive qualities in my ability."

"So you want to use adapting your ability to illness as a reason not to cure you?" Savannah had a thoughtful look on her face, "Do you think it would work?"

She wasn't really talking to me. She'd switched her focus to Goliath by now.

"Are the students from your class out of the room now?" I pulled my clothes closer to me in a suggestive manner, "I don't want them to turn the camera back on remotely, and see my big scaley ass."

Savannah looked at Goliath, and motioned for him to go out the door first. I switched as soon as they left, and got dressed. My transformation was a bit slow, but considering how much my mana was trembling it wasn't too bad. I stepped out of Goliath's little office space, and kept my head down. The camera's shouldn't be able to pick up the little sparks I was coughing out.
