The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

Accidental Rage Out

"What did you do to me?" Ethan closed the door slowly.

"I was raging out when I locked eyes with you," I frowned, "So when I hypnotized you I sent you into a rage too."

"Wait," Ethan looked at me funny, "Is that what happens to you when you loose your temper?"

"No," I admitted, "That wasn't just loosing my temper. That was worse."

"I didn't know you got that angry," Ethan leaned on the wall across from me.

"I'm not trying to be that angry," I frowned, "Everything that irritates me turns to anger. Then the anger stacks up, and then I just go nuts when I get hurt."

Ethan's eyes dropped slowly. I was pretty much drained so I leaned off the wall, and went to my room. Throwing my damaged clothes into the repair bin, and pulling my clean clothes out of the other. Switching back to dragon form, and jumping on the bed. I hadn't gotten the xp from eating today.

I hadn't eaten enough to get the xp from the quest. I frowned to myself. My temper was getting worse as I leveled up. I really hoped it wouldn't keep going that way. If it did I wouldn't be able to stay in this academy.

The irritation I felt whenever Ethan got on my nerves was completely different though. Now that I was thinking about it. It was completely different when Ethan got on my nerves. I never felt actual anger when it came to Ethan. Any irritation I did feel faded quickly when it came to Ethan.

I found that a bit odd, but I didn't have the energy to think about it in detail right now. I curled up slowly getting ready to sleep. I definitely wouldn't be hypnotizing Ethan while I was that angry ever again. I fell into a fitful sleep. I hadn't meant to hypnotize Ethan like that.

I was actually kind of glad to hear the alarm when it went off the next morning. I hadn't liked what I'd been dreaming about. I jumped out of bed. Stretching quickly as I grabbed up the clean clothes I dropped on the floor the night before. Switching forms, and pulling on my clothes quickly.

I left the room quickly. I felt guilty about how I'd hypnotized Ethan into a rage so I rushed off to get something to eat since I hadn't eaten enough yesterday. I sent a message to Ethan letting him know I would meet him in front of his club room if he still wanted to. I stuffed down as much as I could stand of the breakfast food. I preferred meat so everything else kind of sucked for me.

When had my taste in food changed so much. I finished up, and headed for Ethan's club room. Waiting outside for him. Since I'd gone beserk I felt drained of all my rage. I wouldn't be throwing punches unless someone really ticked me off.

I could feel Ethan coming so I straightened, and looked for him. I thought I saw a familiar shape not to far from me. Was someone following me? I looked through the crowd trying to spot that shape again. I should have been paying more attention after I'd been alarmed by someone else's magic.

They could have easily been following me around. If they'd seen the aftermath of what had happened between me, and Baron's crew I might be in trouble. Ethan had done most of that, but it didn't matter. They might be following me around now. I would try to lure them out when we went back to the club.

Gathering elemental mana would be easy for me. I'd have to focus my air element so the other students didn't notice. Water would be too obvious. Ethan came up to me when I was distracted.

"Hey," Ethan waved at me hesitantly.

I locked eyes with him right away. Hypnotizing him into calmness.

"There you go," I turned to leave.

"Hey," Ethan sounded more confident, "It's okay. I know you didn't mean to make me mad yesterday."

I had paused while walking when he spoke to me. I started walking again. I didn't want to accidentally do anything else. I kept my pace casual as I walked to the club room slowly. I had to resist the urge to run to my club room.

I didn't want to loose my tail at the moment. Right now I wasn't trying to give away that I'd noticed the tail. My body was tense, but I managed to resist the urge to turn, and look as I opened the door. Stepping into the club room, and going off to sit by myself. I dropped my right hand down next to my lap so what I was doing couldn't clearly be seen as I started watching the other students as they came in.

Word had gotten around by now that a couple first years had completely destroyed six of the second year students. A lot of the rumors probably mentioned that I was one of them since I was seen being dragged off by three of them. I was left alone completely. Which suited me just fine. I didn't really want anyone getting close enough to annoy me right now anyways.

The last of the club members came in, and everyone found somewhere around the edges of the arena to sit. Away from me as they waited for Goliath to begin. I wasn't really paying attention to Goliath today as I started slowly gathering a small ball of air in the palm of my open right hand. All while I was completely focused on who noticed that I was using magic. No one seemed to react so I let the ball of air fade out of existence.

I was sure that someone in here had attempted to use magic on me yesterday before everything had gone completely awry. If I'd had a tail right now it would be lashing back and forth. I leaned back in the seat, and groaned as I debated on what to try next.

"Wyatt," Goliath rapped me on the head with his knuckles, "Are you going to pay attention or do I have to make you?"

"Sorry sir," I sat up focusing the majority of my focus on the big man not far from me, "Just had something on my mind sir."

As I was saying," Goliath stepped away from me, "Next week there's a small club competition. Nothing too dangerous. It's like the first fitness exam in a fitness class. You go out there. See what you can do, and then you can see how you improve from there." Goliath paused, "Now as to where this little competition is being held. We'll be going to a high rift area, and exterminating some of the beasts that have come through the rifts."

This drew out some murmurs from most of the club.

"Relax," Goliath held up his hand to silence the group, "The area is moderately stable. Most of the rifts there are too small for anything too deadly to come through, and they don't stay open for longer than a couple hours. They're what is known as natural rifts. The area is patrolled by a it's own small army plus one of the four greats at all times."
