The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

A real workout

I headed to the club quietly. Savannah joined up with me on the way. She seemed disappointed, and a little lost in thought.

"Goliath told you pretty much the same thing I did," I looked at her out of the corner of my eye, "Didn't he?"

She didn't respond, but the emotional turmoil was enough to give me my answer. I stepped into the clubroom only to get a funny look from everyone in club. I was literally the center of attention.

"What?" I scanned over them all with a dirty look.

Most of them averted their gazes as they started whispering amongst each other. Goliath silence them by blaring the simulation hall start horn. I ignored the noise as I sat down in my usual spot away from the rest of the club.

"I'm sure you've all heard by now," Goliath smiled as he drew the attention of everyone in the club, "But Wyatt has a new ability. It's an adaptive type of ability. Wyatt can tell you the details if he wants, but with his personality I doubt he'd be willing to talk to any of you." Goliath looked at me, "How about a demonstration Wyatt?"

Anger made my hair stand on end as I gave Goliath a look. He really intended to put me through my paces. I stood up, and walked to the simulation floor like I'd been asked to. Goliath set up one of the same simulations I'd faced when I was first thinking about joining his club.

"Bearook again huh?" I smiled, "One, two, three, four, and five."

I counted them as they formed around me. They didn't give me much XP, but I was just a hatchling the last time I faced them. This would be a fun way to see how much my strength had grown. The start sound went off, and I started moving immediately. I ran at the closest Bearook as it charged at me.

I matched the speed it was using against me. At first. Until we were right on top of each other. Then I sidestepped so fast that the bearook didn't have time to notice I wasn't in front of it anymore. From next to the bearook I punched it as hard as I could.

Knocking it a good twenty feet away from me, and killing it with that single strike. I didn't wait for it to melt before striking the one that was following me. I hit it in the head so hard it's whole body jerked to the side before skidding to a stop a few feet behind me. I stopped the next two by letting them bite into my arms, and using my footholds to stop it. Their teeth barely scratched my skin.

A smile broke out on my face as I forced both of them off of me. Grabbing their heads, and slamming them together. Killing them both. Now there was only one left. I roundhouse kicked the last one's head off as soon as it came in range.

My kicks were far stronger than my punches so knocking it's head off was rather easy. Now that I thought about it I could probably do the same with a punch if I wanted. I tore off my shredded sleeves as I walked to the edge of the arena. Balling them up before tossing them over the wall, and climbing over myself. My arms were barely scratched so I'd probably be healed before the end of the club meeting.

"You ruined my shirt," I looked up at Goliath with a frown.

Some of the girls in the club leaned forward when they saw my lean muscles.

"What are you looking at?" I snapped at them, "You knew on day one that none of you were my type."

This would only reinforce the rumor going around that I was gay, but who gave a flying fuck what any of them thought. I just didn't find any of them attractive in that way, and that was ignoring the fact that I was too young to feel that way about anything. Letting them think I was into guys suited me just fine. There were far less openly gay guys in this school then there were girls. I sat down next to Savannah, and gave her a sideways smirk.

She almost chuckled at the way I was intentionally misleading the students around the school. I was left alone after that. There was another outing coming up. This one would be on another planet this time instead of rift city like before. A smaller planet with beasts that topped out at tier ten, and most of the beasts that actually reached that level lived deep within the network of canyons that covered most of that little world.

The surface beasts rarely exceeded tier five. I figured I was around tier five in my dragon form without using any of my magic. It kind of excited me actually. Beasts that were at my level physically would give me something fun to do in the near future. It was about a month out though.

I was fine with that. It would be a good opportunity to split off from the military. I could hold off on any major leveling until then. I was quiet for the rest of the club meeting as Goliath explained the basic safety measures we would be using when we went off planet. This planet didn't have any ruling intelligent Archaic species so it wasn't ranked too highly as a planet. Overall the planet was a level three B rank planet.

The level, and rank of a planet determined the highest tier beasts could be on a planet. It was an odd combination of level, and letter rankings. Ironically fighters outside of the military had the same ranking system as planets. It made sense since guilds, and different factions weren't part of the military. Couldn't have them using the same ranking system as the military.

That could cause confusion. Now how did those rankings go again?
