Severed Fate

A heroic villainess, Corlissa Veronique is an anomaly herself, such a paradox is the best description of her existence. A pitiful soul forever chained to the bindings of the Villainess, she was a bug in the system, a glitch in society, a defect in the world. Memories of past lives, her own life played on repeat, that was the curse of the Villainess. Emotions never left her, she felt the suffocation of betrayal time and time again, the burning of hate, the drowning of despair, the delightful yet excruciating taste of love. Each time they turned their backs to her she felt the same emotions each and every time. It was as if she was just a marionette, obeying commands against her will as if her free-flowing string of fate that connected to her 'happily ever after' was trapped tightly in the grip of other people's hands, stretching and fraying it however they wished. She vowed to, without fail, fulfil the wishes of the previous villainess who had left the world with unmistakable anguish...and sympathy. Such empathy... "You are a person, no matter what you look like or what you do, unless you prove me otherwise I will continue to view you as who you are." Such compassion... "I wish you didn't have to suffer, I wish you could've been born into a better world." Such understanding... "Let me handle the rest, take a comfortable rest." Such selflessness... "I won't let you suffer anymore..." She truly was such an exemplary hero. --- The cover art is not mine, I found it on Google. ^^

The tutor is coming in the afternoon but it is still morning, Sir Lionel brought my breakfast to my room.

“Sir Lionel? Come sit with me,” I whined to him.

“Fine fine, you crazy child,” despite his mean words I could tell that he was only joking.

“How do you prove to be competent in both weaponry and intelligence, I feel inferior even though I’m older than you,” he sighed.

“Muahahahaha, this is the power of youth! Ah- I forgot to ask Papa about training,” a sudden melancholy aura surrounded me.

“Calm down, you oddball. How did you even get the Duke to invite you to the council meeting, only the most important figures of our kingdom can attend it.”

“I sent letters to him, though it was only 2, I had evidence and data ready to send a third letter. The content of those letters could probably count as treason but I’m sure that the King isn’t as petty and immature to behead me for that,” hehe, Sir Lionel’s face is quite amusing right now.

This is quite odd though. I am becoming more childish, I’m not losing any knowledge but I’m enjoying myself more, I’m smiling more and I can feel this emotion called joy. It’s such an odd but pleasant sensation, in my past lives I’ve never felt this before. I always desired a tomorrow, I was constantly looking ahead that I could never appreciate anything because I was incessantly desiring a better future.

Sir Lionel and conversed for the remaining time until the tutor arrived to test me. A knock sounded from outside the room before the door opened.

I recognise this person from my previous lives, Sir Edmond Von Francaise, he is the son of Baron Francaise who doesn't have much influence or land. He was acknowledged as a genius from an early age and was known as one of the kingdom’s future elites that would allow the country to prosper.

I suppose that Sir Edmond Von Francaise didn’t look forward to tutoring a 6-year-old and was scowling the entire time, perhaps he had other things to attend to but was forced to waste his time on me because he couldn’t afford to offend the Duke.

“Corlissa, this is Sir Edmond Von Francaise, he will be testing you today.”

“Understood, when will we start?” I questioned. My father then gazed towards my new tutor.

“We will start now,” answered Sir Edmond and thus we headed to the library to begin the test.

When the door to the library closed his expression seemed to differ and it appeared that he was prepared to speak his mind.

“I don’t know why the Duke needed me to test someone not worth my time, but I’ll let you know that you won’t be able to answer anything in this test. The Duke has shown me the reports you have written and I will make sure to reveal the person working for you, no child would be able to think of such topics. If you’re trying to gain attention by supposedly being a prodigious child I will completely foil your lies, so unless you want to be embarrassed just admit that you were not the one who wrote those letters and don’t even try take the test because I am warning you now, not even graduates of Amiere Academy can get 80% on this test. I’ve seen other noble children like you, trying to fake being intelligent just for attention but really barely even understanding simple arithmetic-”

“Are you done yet? Let’s just hurry up and start, your incessant chattering is getting on my nerves,” that came out a bit colder than I intended but I couldn’t just stand there while I was being ridiculed.

He seemed to have gotten annoyed at my words and slammed the paper down onto the table.

“Tch. If you think you’re so smart then go ahead,” although this is not fitting in such a situation I have come to question why everyone is so good looking. Sir Edmond probably has many noble daughters fawning over him, he has blonde hair, forest green eyes and smooth pale skin.

I quickly snapped out of my thoughts to be met with the angered expression of Sir Edmond and a test paper in front of me. There was a slightly tense atmosphere in the air when I turned the page of the test paper to begin.

This is quite shocking.

I don’t know if this is because of the many lives I have lived or because of the low standards of this world. The test is easy, extremely easy, honestly, I could’ve done this at the age of 3. I feel like I am cheating if 18-year-olds can’t even answer these questions with ease. In my past lives, I never had the chance to grow up to the age where I could be accepted into Amiere Academy, I always met my demise prematurely, in the lives where I was able to be accepted, I still met my end nonetheless. Rather, the events that occurred in Amiere Academy only fuelled the rage brewing within Evie Luxiere's love interests.

The majority of the test consisted of simple financial mathematics, the answer to these questions would be easily found by graphing it. The topics included simple ideas like break-even points and profit, I had higher hopes for this world. I wonder if this is an easier test since it’s for a 6-year-old instead of an academy student.

What a cliché reaction, Sir Edmond had a surprised expression as he was marking my answers. He clicked his tongue and slammed another test paper alongside a file of data onto the table in front of me. It appears that my guess was right, he gave me an easy test at the start.

The next test gauged my ability at comprehending data in real-life situations, finding a trend and determining the issue but oddly enough, it did not test if I could find an efficient solution. There were graphs of taxes, poverty rates and distribution of medical goods, there were also lengthy reports detailing the medicinal properties of medicines which had ‘positive’ effects on the human body. Not to mention how the knowledge of human anatomy was quite limited and the position of organs is wrong.

After I finished the test, I handed it back to my tutor. While I waited for his response I rested my chin on the back of my hand, my elbow propped up onto the desk.
