Rebirth

In a hospital. Tokyo Prefecture:

What I feel now is a completely different atmosphere. A dim white light fell over my eyes. The body parts that I felt were very short, compared to what I am used to.

A strong smell of iron was invading my nostrils. My head was 'still' blurry, though.

Several voices attacked my ear, which  strangely felt vulnerable and weak. It seemed like that if a sound too loud would invade my ear, my eardrums will surely burst open.

I experienced other things happening with my body that I couldn't recognize because of my unclear head.

As my head started to clear, I felt someone wrapping its arms around me and saying,

"This child… H-he is not crying."

A simple observation.

Huh? I stared at him dumbly.

He was clearly looking at me, with intent eyes.

What did this guy just say?

In my field of vision, I could see this bald man with his shoulders covered with white cloth and collar neatly resting around his neck, currently with a shocked expression plastered on his face.

As I was calmly observing, my body started to swing itself, or rather the guy holding me started swinging me in panic with his trembling hands.(How did he hold me so easily?! I am a big and large guy!)

"Hey.. hey!", the man exclaimed.

That swing seemed to get on my nerves, so I swung my own (little?) arms in protest.

Seeing my movement, the white-clothed man suddenly stopped with visible surprise and relief on his face.

Then he happily exclaimed,

"Oh good God.. He is alive!"

The woman resting on a small bed, who was heavily breathing also brought an expression of amazing relief on her face.

I observed calmly. I saw the woman resting on the bed surrounded with machines, especially the one found mostly in hospitals. I could see tools resting on a white metal trolley.

After some time, it was as if realisation itself dawned upon me. I realised or rather, concluded that after dying, I have been reborn in another world.

Just like those fiction stories for which people would get crazy about.

This situation just felt too surreal. After all, I had never thought something like reincarnation actually happens to people.

It is not the most intellectual of the species that survives; it is not the strongest that survives; but the species that survives is the one that is able to adapt to and to adjust best to the changing environment in which it finds itself.

However, as the unbelievable was happening to me, I didn't panic or lose my calm.

I didn't cry or whine about losing my previous worldly connections or my parents, whom I valued more than my own life.

I just accepted it all as it came. All this crazy stuff about reincarnation and new parents became real from surreal.

I started living with my new family in Tokyo, Japan.

But even now, as I think about my death, I always break into a cold sweat.

I clearly remember that eerie atmosphere, that timing of the truck and the feeling of that chilling, cold breeze on me.

On that day, the truck slammed itself against me perfectly, even when I tried to dodge it with absolute confidence using my trained body.

Some questions still evade my mind.

Why did the truck move at such high speed?

Why didn't it stop?

And more, no, most importantly,

why, or rather, how the truck was being driven by no creature?

Was it an advanced automatic truck?

I have heard about no such truck that is automatic.

But, really, at that time, it seemed to me as if the world itself was trying to kill me.

Scary, right..?

Anyways, I could only ignore the questions, which I think I have no chances getting answers of.

I can only keep living as I have till now, looking forward to the future that I will come to experience.

Oh, and yes, my new name is Izaya Orihara. Amazing name, no..?
