Chapter 5

"Catch the girl, I got Serene " A bearded guy ordered.

"Violet run!" the lady screamed. Her face was a blur but there was familiarity in her voice. I kept on running. I could hear footsteps behind me. Blood pounded in my ears as I ran across the street.

Don't look back.

Don't look back.

My feet gave away mid-run and I collapsed on the road. My eyes widened when I realised a speeding car coming towards me. The headlights blinded my vision.

I woke up with a start, gasping for breath. It was a dream. Just a dream.

Except I'd this dream for years now. But this was the first time after my father's death. My hair was stuck to my face because of sweat. Slowly removing Cora's arm from around my waist, I slipped out. Getting into the bathroom, I remembered the feeling of being watched. I felt sick to my stomach. Everything has been downhill recently. I splashed water on my face and stared back at the girl in front of me. Hundreds of tiny freckles were scattered around the nose, huge eye bags hinted at lack of sleep, hair was tangled up in a mess.

I pulled out my phone and dialed the number. I'm tired of waiting. I need answers and I'm getting them now.

[Hunter's POV]

"Sir, Ms. Meyers is calling you."

I cocked my head to the side, "Really?" What does she want now? A small smile played on my lips as I dropped the wrench in my hand, on the table. Beckoning Dylan to come near, I supported myself on the table.

"Put it on speaker." I ordered, waving my bloody hands at him.

"What the hell took you so long, you bastard?"

I glared at Dylan, who was doing his best not to laugh.

"Always a pleasure talking to you, Sweetheart. I will hang up now."

"No! wait,-sorry, hey, Hello!"

Chuckling I wiped my hands with a handkerchief and put the phone to my ear.

"What do you want?"

"How do you know I want something? What if I called just to, you know, talk." She sounded a bit annoyed.

"Yeah, no you're right. You always call me to gossip about your latest boy crushes and which nail paint colour would suit the best?"

"Really, Arch. Sarcasm? And is that what you think girls talk about?"

I sighed. "V, just say it. I'm kind of busy right now." My eyes slid towards the limp body tied to the chair.

Suddenly her voice got low, "I can't talk on the phone, can you meet me?"

Of course I can. "Yeah, sure, I guess."

"Well, I'm waiting outside then."

I immediately hung up and turned to Dylan, "I have to leave."

He gave me a big grin which pretty much just made me uncomfortable. He sometimes reminded me of Violet's weird friend, Kara.

"I thought you were busy."

I sighed to myself, "Dammit."

Dylan looked at me curiously, "What?"

Smirking at him I spoke, "I just realized If you weren't so good at your job, I would've fucking shot you in your damn head a long time ago."

That did the job. His smile vanished within a second.

"Here.." I threw a knife in his direction. "..Finish the job."

He stared at the weapon quizzically. "Don't you think it's way too blunt?"

"Good, use it well." I patted his shoulder and left.

I nodded to myself when I heard faint screams, while climbing up the stairs of the basement. He really is good at his job.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

She was leaning against the brick wall. Her hair was tied in a loose pony. I grimaced at the sight of a lit cigarette in between her fingers. Walking up to her I snatched it away and threw it to the ground.

"Hunter! You fuc-"

The pause made me look down at her. I followed her gaze which lingered on my shirt. My eyes widened at the blood stain on the edge of my sleeve.

𝘚𝘩𝘪𝘵!

Dammit Dylan, useless as hell. I rolled up both the sleeves and cleared my throat, making her look up. She met my eyes for a split second before looking elsewhere. She was toying with the ring on her left index finger. She did it whenever she was nervous.

"Maybe...maybe this wasn't a good time, I..I will just." She spun around making her escape.

No.

I grabbed ahold of her arm without thinking, then immediately let go when she turned around to look at me with a questioning gaze.

"It's alright, just say what you were here for."

She rocked back and forth on her heels before finally once again meeting my eyes," Who is Serene?"

How did she-

"Who?" I furrowed my brows and tried my best to maintain my calm composure.
