Cam could feel her body reacting to Michael’s closeness. She took another deep breath and tried to make her voice steady. “I wasn’t that successful, I made a lot of mistakes.”
“But you did succeed in your mission and you are alive. That is the important part,” Michael interrupted. “We can always work on more skills later.”
Cam gasped as Michael reached out and stroked her cheek, running her thumb over the small scar beside her left eye that Frank’s ring had left.
Michael’s words were soft, tentative. “I have thought of you constantly since last spring. I have been very good these past few years at being inaccessible, emotionally. It was a big shock to realize I could not erase you from my mind.”
Cam stared back into eyes that burned into hers, but didn’t trust her voice not to break. “I…I’m still undercover. Legally, I’m on parole…”
