Chapter 1Chapter 1: Lifeweaver

"Well, sh*t." Oakley said as he was watching the news, what he saw made him realize that the world was going to hell, quite literally. Like any other normal person, he would have gathered as much as food and supplies as possible or find shelter.

Unfortunately it was probably too late by now, he wouldn't be able to do that, as the stores and most places that were easily accessible have been sacked already. He would have to make do with what little he had, which probably wouldn't even last him a week.

He was just a poor college student after all, how could he possibly be shopping for food often and hoarding food, when he could barely pay for his school supplies and rent.

His mind was racing, thinking of any solutions, and the noises he heard inside and outside weren't helping. There was a lot of yelling and chaos, he could even faintly make out the sounds of ripping and tearing, through the thin walls of the cheap apartment that he could barely afford and he didn't want to check what it was.

A moment later, he was done thinking about it, and his solution? Well, there was none, he concluded that he was f*cked. Little food and supplies and being stranded in a place full of soon-to-be zombies cemented that thought, until a sound resounded in his head and a screen appeared in front of him.

[Selection initiated, choose a class within one minute.]

{Lifeweaver 5★}

{Gardener 1★}

{Botanist 3★}

Bang! Bang!

He could hear something thumping on his door, but ignored it, he had little time to choose. There was no description or anything, of the classes he could choose.

'The stars must denote rarity, and from the name I can get a sense of what each class does.' Oakley thought as he analyzed his options, 'The Gardener and Botanist class probably won't remedy my situation now, Lifeweaver it is.'

[Confirmed, unique class, Lifeweaver selected.]

[Select Skill.]

{Pea Shooter 1★}

{Corpse Flower 2★}

{Potato Mine 1★}

Now, here was where his eyes shined, he knew what the word unique implied. The class is unique to him, he didn't know what it was but he would soon find out.

More importantly, he could now select a skill. Although, he was disappointed by the lack of description, he could infer what each skill did.

'It's like that game used to play, but a little different as well.' he thought thinking back to the game he always played when young, before shaking his head and selecting what he thought would be most useful.

{Pea Shooter selected.}

He chose Pea Shooter, though it was low rarity, it was what he needed. The Corpse Flower skill most likely attracted zombies, which isn't what he needed now. And, he didn't want to blow a hole open in his apartment with the Potato Mine skill, nor wait for the delay that he remembered it had to set up.

He now had the skill, but to activate it, he needed soil.

Thinking so, he rushed towards his cactus plant kept by the window, and dug out the cactus with his bare hands. He was in a rush, whatever was at his door might rush in at any moment.

He bore with the pain, and activated {Pea Shooter} after taking the cactus out. He felt a little drained from that action, but didn't put too much thought into it.

A plant sprouted and grew rapidly upwards right before his eyes, standing tall, despite the big blowpipe or blowgun shaped head. It even had those black, beady eyes, that gleamed with intelligence.

Thud!

The door was broken, and several people- no, they looked like corpses with grotesque wounds all over. He could see fresh blood dripping from their open, gaping wounds.

Luckily, the doorway wasn't too big, so the zombies couldn't all swarm in.

When they rushed in the plant locked in on them immediately, and started shooting out giant, cannon ball sized peas.

Several peas were shot out, about one pea per second. The peas went through the zombies like a knife through butter.

The zombies hit were blown apart, with the peas even hitting the zombies that had been in the back.

Oakley could feel his stomach churning and the sight of the now exposed innards and bodily fluids of the corpses wasn't helping. There was the fresh smell of blood in the air, it permeated throughout the air, emitting a dense smell of iron.

He calmed his breathing, and thought of all he has seen so far in the world, prior to the apocalypse.

Though not in person, he has seen graphic images of wars, murders, and other heinous things from history. He even remembered the crazy methods devised by humans to torture their own, each more gruesome and bizarre than the next. He realized that the world was already f*cked up, even before the apocalypse.

'That's right, I've seen worse before.' Oakley thought, almost as if to reassure himself, 'These things aren't human anymore.'

That's right the crux of the matter was that these creatures- or, zombies, were no longer human. They were monsters that preyed on humans, and with that Oakley steeled himself, after all, he didn't want to die.

'I still have retirement to look forward to.' Oakley knew that the place he worked at was probably infested with zombies. He was thinking about how even in this h*ll that the world has probably become, that he would not only survive, but thrive and prosper in a place he would make his home. He wanted to find- no, pave a path towards such a place.

He watched the zombie funnel into his apartment through the narrow hall, only to be blasted down, thinking that he didn't want to end up like them.

The pea shooter was firing peas like there was no tomorrow, Oakley didn't know where the peas came from, but then again this whole situation was messed up.

Bang! Bang!

Oakley could also hear gunshots in the distance, and he wasn't surprised, remembering that there were more guns than people in America. He heard cars honking and chaos outside, and could faintly hear a microphone somewhere in the distance saying something about a stadium. Everyone was probably headed there, everyone that could head there of course. Oakley was trapped in his apartment currently.

Guns were perfect for fighting against zombies, with the range and whatnot, but the ammunition could only last so long. There's also the fact that the guns needed repairs and maintenance.

It was only a matter of time, before such weapons became useless.

'But, if I gained powers then others could have gained them too.' Oakley thought, not crossing out that possibility.

And, the world has basically become a lawless place, Oakley doubted that the governments could do anything for too long. He would have to protect himself and his interests, nobody would be there enforcing the law.

...

By now, the noises in the hallway have stopped, and there were corpses littered across the floor.

The pea shooter had been shooting out peas for several hours, showing no fatigue whatsoever. It simply stared at Oakley, as if waiting for instructions.

Oakley rubbed the pea shooter's head, it was all that was between him and the zombies' jaws. He would bring it with him, when he figured out how to leave.

He looked at the narrow hall leading to his door.

Oakley couldn't get out anymore unless he moved all of the zombies from his hallway, he might just have to get his hands dirty again.

[Out of combat, experience gained.]

"Out of combat and ex-" Oakley muttered to himself, confused at what he was seeing, and just when he was thinking about it, another popup occurred.

=============

[Interface]

Name: Oakley

Class: Lifeweaver 5★

Power: 4

Abilities: Pea Shooter 1★

=============

'That's all, are you kidding me?' Oakley was distraught at the lack of information given, it was like the system or whatever it was wanted to baby him as little as possible, only giving what was necessary.

There was none of the health, mana, or experience bars that he had expected. He thought that 'Power' must be levels, and that gaining it required gaining experience.

Aside from that, there weren't even the stats he expected to appear. Where was the STR, CHA, INT, and AGI among others that should've been there!?

He only had 'Power,' or his level, to go off of. It was honestly quite frustrating, being thrown into a situation where your life was on the line, and not even knowing anything about it. He could only keep fighting, hoping to get some levels, as Pea Shooter wouldn't be enough.

'If I could get stronger, then my enemies should be able to do so as well.'

He couldn't be sure of it, but that was what Oakley thought about the zombies. And, even if he was being a bit paranoid, it didn't hurt to be cautious.

There were also the humans, which would no longer be restrained by the laws.

If there was anything Oakley knew about humans, it was that they can't be trusted, at least most of them.

He didn't even factor in the good ones, after all, they didn't usually live for long.

With that in mind, Oakley started gathering what he could into a backpack, foodstuff and important supplies especially.

He needed to get moving.
