Chapter 1

"Emily, we can't do this," Richard's stern voice echoed in the opulent living room.

"But Richard, I can't go on like this anymore," Emily pleaded, tears welling up in her eyes.

"Do you have any idea what this will do to our reputation? Think about our business," Richard countered, his eyes cold and unyielding.

"I don't care about the business right now. I need to find myself again, Richard. Stop being so selfish for once. I won't put my life on stake just because of your unwavering insensitivity and tactlessness. Grow up! You act all cold and unbothered but I can see through that serious facade of yours. Don't you dare to manipulate me by your cheap tricks. I'm not your porcelain doll whom you can try to control anytime, anywhere." Emily yelled, her voice trembling with determination.

Hearing her yell at him which was very new to him, his eyes filled with anger and amusement, seeing her talk back to him for the first time. The fact that she had learnt to stand up for herself didn't sit well with him. He clenched his fists really tightly, his fingernails hurting his palms badly but the amount of hurt he felt was nothing like the pang tugging at his heart.

He glared at her, his eyes turning to a darker shade. "Alright then, do whatever you want. But, remember...you can't hide from me. Even if you try to run away from me a million times, I'll find you a trillion times." Saying this, he walked towards the door of the living room, his body shaking with anger and left, slamming the door. Emily flinched a bit, but soon slumped down the floor, with tears of helplessness flowing out of her beautiful doe eyes. She knew what she had to do - leaving the country and move somewhere else, leaving everything behind to start fresh.

-----

Amidst the ticking clock and her restless heart, Emily knew she had to break free from the suffocating prison her marriage had become. With each passing day, Richard's relentless pursuit of success had left little room for love and compassion. As she finally mustered the courage to file for divorce, Emily found herself entangled in a legal battle, facing Richard's powerful attorneys who scrutinized her every move.

In the midst of loneliness, she made a life-altering decision: she would leave the country, seeking a fresh start where her past wouldn't haunt her. With the help of a discreet organization, Emily assumed a new identity, shedding her old life like a snake shedding its skin.

Arriving in a foreign land, Emily felt a mixture of excitement and fear. But she was free - free from Richard's manipulation and the chains that bound her in her old life. Taking odd jobs to sustain herself, she discovered solace in connecting with others who had faced similar struggles, finding a sense of belonging she hadn't felt in years.

Unknown to Emily, Richard's determination to find her grew with each passing day. Unwilling to accept defeat, he hired a team of skilled detectives to track her down, seeking to control her once more.

As the pursuit intensified, Emily found moments of happiness amidst the uncertainty, and she also stumbled upon an unexpected romance that both scared and excited her. However, the constant fear of being discovered cast a dark shadow over her newfound happiness.

Emily's resilience was soon put to the test as she faced the depths of her strength. The thrilling game of cat-and-mouse with Richard's detectives started to challenge her determination to be free, leading to a climactic confrontation where she would have to confront her past and the man who had held her captive for far too long.

"You can't just walk away, Emily! This is madness!" Richard's voice boomed, frustration evident in his tone. He was furious upon the fact that she had stood by her word - to leave him and everything behind to start afresh.

"I've made up my mind, Richard. I can't live like this anymore," Emily asserted, her voice steadier than she felt.

"You're being irrational. Think about our family, our business," Richard pleaded, trying to find a crack in her resolve.

"It's not just about the business, Richard. It's about me, about my happiness," Emily retorted, her eyes resolute.

-----

Emily's decision to pursue the divorce shook Richard to his core. He couldn't fathom a life without her by his side, controlling the intricacies of their lives. With each passing day, the tension between them escalated, both fighting for their desires.

But Emily's determination to break free remained unwavering. She sought advice from a close friend who had gone through a similar situation.

"You deserve happiness, Emily. Don't let anyone hold you back," her friend encouraged, offering support in the difficult times ahead.

Emily smiled ear-to-ear, being overwhelmingly teary-eyed that finally, someone had understood her. "Yeah, thank you for your kind words. I really appreciate it. Now I need to pack up my stuff. Take care, goodbye!"

Her friend, too, bid her farewell and then, Emily disconnected the phone call, wiping the flowing tears out of her eyes with the back of her palm.

"I wish I could hide in a shell, where no-one would be able to find me. I'm tired - tired of living in this hellhole. I can't get myself together anymore. The more I try to get myself out of this whole ruckus, the more I slump down in this terrible labyrinth, which seemingly has no way out." She murmured to herself in a low voice, trying hard not to cry.

-----

Weeks turned into a legal battlefield, with Richard's lawyers employing cunning tactics to undermine Emily's case.

"Why are you doing this to me?" Emily exclaimed, frustration etched across her face.

"It's not personal, Mrs. Hartman. It's just business," the opposing lawyer replied coldly.

-----

Richard's hold over Emily grew weaker, as she discovered her own strength, learning to stand up for herself in court.

"I won't let you intimidate me anymore," Emily declared, facing Richard's lawyer with newfound courage.

-----

Despite the mounting pressure, Emily refused to back down. She was resolute in reclaiming her identity, even if it meant leaving behind the life she had built with Richard.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, Emily reached her breaking point. She dialed the number of the discreet organization she had heard about, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I need your help. I need to disappear. Meaning, I need to love somewhere far,far away from him. I can't live with someone whose every cell of his body screams toxicity and narcissism.," Emily confessed, her heart racing with both fear and anticipation.

-----

In a foreign land, Emily embraced her new identity, leaving behind her old life like a distant memory. It was exhilarating and terrifying at the same time.

"This is the right thing to do," Emily reassured herself, gazing out of her small apartment window.

-----

Unknown to Emily, Richard's desperation to find her grew with each passing day. His anger at her escape consumed him, driving him to hire a team of skilled detectives.

"She can't just disappear like this. Find her, no matter the cost!" Richard ordered, his voice laced with fury.

-----

As Emily settled into her new life, she found solace in connecting with others who had faced similar struggles. They formed a supportive network, empowering each other to face the challenges ahead.

"I never thought I'd find people who understood me like this," Emily admitted, grateful for the newfound camaraderie.

-----

In her pursuit of freedom, Emily encountered an unexpected romance that tugged at her heartstrings.

"Can I trust you?" Emily asked cautiously, her heart torn between caution and the desire for love.

"You can trust me, Emily. I'm here for you," her new companion reassured, sincerity in his eyes.

-----

Yet, even in her newfound happiness, Emily couldn't escape the ever-present fear of Richard's detecti

ves. She knew the chase wasn't over, and she had to remain vigilant.

"I won't let them find me. I won't let him control me again," Emily vowed, determination flashing in her eyes.
