"I know. These are the soldiers ordered by the noble to kill us."
I anticipated the soldiers to come out in search for the perpetrators – us, under the noble's orders. But isn't the response too fast?
We both came at night to kill him to make sure he dies before he even knows of his son's death. Then how did he know?
This isn't modern times where communication is a one second thing. Even with the existence of magic, there is still a lack of such magic or a device like a telephone. It shows the difficulty of creating it.
'Though the main protagonist manages to do it.'
But that's a thing of the future. At the current times, where the protagonist is still dozing off in the forest hut, how could the noble know of us that fast?
"Kurt."
Miria tapped me and called me out. I looked at her with a questioning gaze, asking her reason to call me out and then she pointed her finger towards the group of soldiers coming out.
"Look at that."
And there I could find a very familiar man. It was the same man who tried to coerce me to surrender for killing the noble's son. That man was standing there with his face full of smiles.
"That bastard!"
I wanted to grab him and twist his neck at the spot after looking at his gleeful smile, but I held my impulse.
At least, it made me clear about how the noble got to know about his son's death so quickly without the existence of a telephone.
"What should we do?"
Miria turned around and asked about my further plans. It was quite a relief to see her being cool-minded, even though that's a façade. She is just hiding her anger for the noble.
I could see the tortured corpse of the noble and a bloody Miria beside it.
'I feel sorry for the noble.'
But of course, this sentiment is in a comical way. I also want him to die as much as Miria wants it.
And the guilt and fear of killing someone? That vanished after killing demon beasts and humans in my hunter career.
If something I have learned in this world is that the rules of my previous world are useless in this world.
"We will act the same."
Though the factors have changed, it didn't have any negative effect on our plans. Rather, it was easier. With guards gone to find the non-existent Kurt and Miria staying in the inn, we will infiltrate and kill the noble of the mansion.
"Let's go."
And with my gesture, both of us entered the mansion. Despite the huge number of guards out of the mansion, there were still some of them left. Both of us crawled slowly and grabbed them from behind, choking them out without much sound.
It was rather inconvenient for me, since my height is still not enough to match the height of adults. So, I had to jump and choke their necks to make them pass out.
'Still, I have to admire myself.'
I am not a narcissist. It's just my current skills that made me realize how much I have grown in this world. Even without magic, I can use my physical skills to display superhuman feats that were not possible in the previous world.
"Kurt, he isn't here."
Miria looked in the room and found no sign of the target.
'One more dud. Fuck! Why does he have such a big mansion?!'
Even Ritzburg mansion isn't that big. I know that a house is also a sign of wealth, a place to show off but still it should be made with utility in mind.
"Let's search for other rooms."
One from another, we went to scan many rooms only to find most of them empty with nothing but loads of expensive items.
"It seems my decision to steal the items was right."
"Huh? What did you say?"
'Did she hear it?'
Miria who heard a murmur turned around and asked about it, making me sweat bucks.
If she knows that I am thinking of gold in the midst of this assassination, she will kill me!
More importantly, if it angers her, my massage appointment might be canceled as well.
"I-It's nothing."
"But I think I heard something. Something like steal–"
"Let's search for that noble. Damn, I swear I will kill him the moment I find him!"
"A-All right."
'Why is he so excited out of nowhere?'
Miria who looked at Kurt being excited in this search unlike before. But she didn't doubt much and followed him.
After all, she has something more important to do than doubt him at the moment.
—
"This is the last one."
I looked at the door, well designed and plated with gold and certain gems. From the flashy door, I was sure that this might be the room of that damn noble.
'Because of him, I had to run all over this huge mansion!'
Even I wanted to kill him as fast as possible and loot his wealth. That is the only way to cool down my rage.
"I-Is this the room?"
Miria looked towards me and asked again. Her lips were trembling, and her hands were shaking. All of it was not a product of fear but of joy.
Her enemy, the one because of whom her family got killed, is just a door away from her.
And now she could take her revenge and empty that anger inside her heart.
"We have searched all over the mansion. This room is the only one left."
There was no doubt that this room is his personal room. And I could feel mana from inside.
It means someone is inside.
'But still I should check it.'
I wanted to save my magic power as much as possible, but to this point, I am fed up with searching blindly all over to find one person.
<Search >
A purple magic circle formed beneath my feet and it started to expand, moving towards the room.
"I am opening it."
Miria's patience couldn't keep her anger at bay and she went on and grabbed that handle to open the door.
But like I said, I have pretty bad luck. Not a single event goes without any incident.
"This…!"
The ominous mana…
"Miria!"
I grabbed her and jumped, moving out of the door and soon…
Boom!
A ray of mana came from behind the door, destroying the door and walls in its path, truly showing its might.
And a figure came out from the room, holding the head of the noble whom we were supposed to hunt.
"K-Kurt… This is…"
The dust settled down, and I finally took a look at the intruder in the mansion.
'Damn! Why? Why did I have to meet him now?'
A man with white hair and handsome features. He was dressed in expensive clothes and his manners were elegant, truly describing nobles unlike the one in his hand. But out of all his features, what stood out the most are those dark red eyes, well defining him.
"Huh? You are alive, humans?"
The man standing in front of me is the main antagonist of this world.
"Oliver Schtrom."
