Humans aren't as wise and knowledgeable, they say, because when those monsters suddenly came 72 years ago and caused chaos all around the world, many of them first thought it was just all made out of lies until they experienced it themselves. Not long before humanities goes extinct, those people who have ‘awakened’ showed strength and courage to fight back against them. That's how humans survive and keep those creatures at bay.
Ever since then, humans have made a national association and corporation for those 'awakened' people who wish to help annihilate those monsters and earn money in the process. That's how everyone came to admire and make it a job that is highly paid but with also many high requirements to meet. The association and corporation also added a ranking for those awakeners.

[Status Window] has also appeared. It came off a bit insulting at first when it made an appearance for it has the rank in its contents and many awakeners' rank are different from their association and corporation's rank it gives to them. It was quite a memorable controversy. They immediately changed their inaccurate ranking and made it the same as it does in their [Status Window]. Of course, some aren't happy with it 'cause it lowers their ranks but they couldn't do anything.
As time passes by, the world finally has its strongest awakener. He's the strongest in the entire world that he was bestowed a rank higher than Shikari. The Venerer, Adonis, lived to be hated and loved by many people. Everybody has their eyes for him, jealousy or obsession. But the world knows he's already taken. Shouldn't be touched nor be stared at. Captivated by a witch nonetheless. It's almost irritating honestly because the witch is almost a Venerer like the strongest.
Eve, Duchess of Evil, is friends with the strongest and they are the only ones who know that their relationship isn't like that. After all, Adonis wouldn't like going out with his co-worker and even if they aren't, he will never wreck a happily married woman and her husband's life. It's not important anymore whether he likes her or not, what only matters is that she's married. He had no plans to tell her because it's simply not worthy.
So in his last moment, his last day in this world tried to make him regret what he should have said. "You sure you don't need me in there? I can defend, heal, and support you, y'know! Hell, I can attack too!" Surely, it's a tempting offer but Adonis wouldn't want to keep his friend from her husband. It's their anniversary today. So he refused her and went into raiding a new catastrophe.
It was a new hell. Adonis called it the Abyss for this hellhole did not just have monstrous creatures but it also contained a new huge threat in humankind. That creature has no name as it slowly reduces their numbers little by little. Until he's the only one who survived all of its intent to kill him. But of course, he wouldn't be unscathed and he even died from bleeding in the process.
He really does have no regrets or that was he was trying to get inside his head. It was only how his mother died. If he wasn't so focused on his job, he would've been there and she could've lived much longer. Adonis has accepted that everyone dies in the end but she could have been with him more than God had planned. It's not a deep regret but a hopeless wish.
So Adonis was really surprised when instead of waking up in the land of paradise, he woke up in his old apartment where he used to live in the past before he became the strongest. Then his wish has truly become hopeless. After all, he only lived in this apartment after his mother died from a catastrophe.
