Emily woke up to the sound of birds chirping outside her window. She stretched, feeling the softness of her bed and the warmth of the morning sun. After getting dressed, she headed downstairs to the kitchen, where the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and baking bread filled the air.

"Good morning, sweetie!" her mother chimed, flipping pancakes on the griddle.

Emily smiled, taking a seat at the table. "Morning, Mom."

As they ate breakfast together, Emily felt grateful for her close-knit family. Her parents were high school sweethearts who had always been supportive of her dreams. Her brother, Jack, was a bundle of energy, always eager to play or tease her.

Curiosity got the better of her, and Emily decided to sneak closer to listen in on their conversation. As she approached, she heard snippets of their discussion that made her heart skip a beat.

"...can't believe you're still involved with her," the woman said, her voice laced with anger.

Mark's response was low and urgent. "You don't understand, Rachel. I have to take care of my family."
