[RINZLER]
Alpha Rinzler Aspen pointed at the maps laying on the table in front of him. He squinted his eyes as he tried to read a city name. He couldn't read it through even if men stood in front of him pointing arrows at him.
He shook his head in annoyance.
Rinzler groaned when a piercing pain shot through his body.
He picked up the concoction he made, a mixture of what he assumed could stop his head from pounding. He stared at it, and a grin formed on his face when he remembered his mother's sweet voice. "Dear, I hope you are not poisoning yourself."
Rinzler drank the concoction at once and slammed the cup on the table. He walked to the pot in the corner of his office and got some water. He rinsed his mouth and walked back to where the map was.
Studying the maps, swimming, jogging, or dueling with his sister was his norm.
His sister always warned him about the first one, but each day, if he was not working out, he was doing it.
But today was one of those days that he didn't understand even one word and that was why he was using his fingers to guide him through the maps. He was restless, waiting for someone to come and call for him.
It has been hours, the hours he knows the Alpha was already announced dead.
He glanced at the door and wondered why no one was coming through it and calling him.
He walked to the door and looked left and right when he saw no one. He looked at his watch and wondered if it was not working. He tapped on it, and indeed it was working. So why was no one rushing through his office to call him?
"Patience." He mumbled and walked back to the table.
He pushed it aside and pulled another one. The top of it had the compass direction. "This is North, South…"
"East and West." He heard a voice.
'Finally.' He thought. He turned around slowly and came face to face with his sister, Savanna.
"Good morning." Rinzler greeted.
"Don't good morning me, I was waiting for you," Savanna said and brushed past him.
She leaned on the table and stared at the map. By now, she expected to find torn apart but no. From the look of it, it seemed as though Alpha Rinzler handled the maps with the same care he would a toddler.
Savannah gathered the maps and rolled them in a bundle. She placed them next to the earthen water pot.
"Brother, why do you insist on reading the maps every morning? You and I both know there is nothing there. We have gone through that thing more times than I can remember." Savanna said softly.
Alpha Rinzler rubbed his hands together. "I know, I was checking the border to see if…"
Savannah raised her hand with a shake of her head. "No. That is another thing we both know. We don't have border disputes with anyone. We are in the middle of the lake. Who are we fighting with, the fish?"
That brought a smile to Alpha Rinzler on his face. He mumbled, "if only they can talk."
Savannah rubbed his back adoringly, "I am sorry that I stopped searching. But one of us had to or else we could lose ourselves in that absurd map. Why isn't it getting old? Wait, do you have some hidden?"
Alpha Rinzler shook his head.
"Dad wants to see you," Savannah said and walked in front of him.
Alpha Rinzler placed a hand on top of his chest hoping that his sister hasn't heard how loud his heart was beating. Savannah threw her head back and smiled at her brother. Rinzler removed the hand from his chest and followed him out of his office.
"Dad." Savannah and Rinzler called at the same time.
"Hey, son."
"Uncle."
Beta Tetra, their father's brother slapped Rinzler's back and left the three of them there.
Rinzler hold his breath as he waited for his father to announce the one thing, he has been waiting all morning. Instead of starting with that, he patted the empty chairs next to him. The siblings stared at each other and then walked to where their father was.
Does he know? Rinzler wondered.
Savannah kissed their father's forehead and sat on his left.
Alpha Aspen inhaled deeply and stared at his son. A sad look spread on his face. "I am sorry to be the bearer of this news but Alpha Fisher is dead."
Savannah gasped.
Rinzler shook his head slowly in a way that didn't appear forced or someone who knew about it already.
Savannah rushed to her brother's side and rubbed her back. And then as if she has just remembered that the dead alpha was her father's best friend. She took his hand to hers and said, "father, I am so sorry."
Even without the forged alliance from their forefathers, Alpha Aspen and Alpha Fisher would have been the greatest friends of all time. They were kind, loving, and patient.
Savannah was confused, she didn't know who to tell sorry more.
Her brother? Because his supposed father-in-law is dead.
Or her father because his best friend is dead.
Alpha Aspen asked her slowly to stand up. She did and sat next to her brother. He said to them, "I have to go there and present our pack."
Rinzler's heart skipped a bit.
"You don't have to go," Savannah said softly to no one in particular.
"Dad, you are unwell. I will go." Rinzler said.
"Are you sure, the girl who rejected you will be there," Savannah stated the obvious.
"I am okay, I will go." He wished his sister didn't add anything else. They were unaware that he went to meet her once a month and Alpha Rinzler didn't know what to tell her sister.
How would he tell her that his brother was a wuss?
How would he say that the girl who rejected him in front of a multitude kept rejecting him repeatedly every time he saw her?
Marina Fisher was his mate. To say he was addicted would be an understatement.
