Aiden’s scream of denial tore through the clearing.

The light surrounding the being went out.

“That’s better.” Tanner put his blood-covered maul back through the ring on his belt. “You really fucked up, didn’t you?” he said to Aiden, then grinned down at him.

Aiden pushed himself onto his elbows, shaking with far more than effort. He’d helped destroy a piece of the divine. The fact he hadn’t meant to—that he’d been trying to help—didn’t matter when the result was as terrible as this. There was less light in the universe now. Someone was dead because of him. And now more people would die than Aiden could even imagine.

He tried to crawl to his sword, end this one way or another before Tanner could, but he barely managed to move another foot before he slumped back to the ground. His eudaemonhad gone silent, as if the divine being’s death had killed that, too.
