Chapter 16: Critical Training and Reconnaissance

In the next chapters, Marvel characters will start to appear

In 2010, Grant Ward received an unexpected call. The CIA, recognizing his expertise and exceptional skills, requested his presence to teach a specialized SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape) course to its agents. SERE training is essential for agents who may face the possibility of capture during critical missions. Grant was about to apply his knowledge to prepare CIA agents for the most challenging situations.

The training was scheduled at a CIA base of operations, equipped with advanced facilities and a controlled environment for simulations. Grant arrived at the location with a briefcase full of training materials and a carefully prepared plan for the upcoming week. He was greeted by a group of CIA agents and officers, all eager to get started.

Captain was on hand to oversee the course introduction and ensure that everything was in order. He approached Grant before the training began.

"Grant," Captain said, "the CIA is excited to have you here." Your knowledge and experience are highly respected, and we are confident that you will do an excellent job.

Grant smiled and replied, "I appreciate it, Captain. I look forward to sharing my knowledge and helping prepare these agents to handle any situation they may encounter."

Captain patted Grant on the back. "Let's do this."

The first session of the SERE course began with a general introduction to the principles of survival, evasion, resistance, and escape. Grant introduced himself to the agents and provided an overview of what would be covered during the training.

"Good morning, everyone," Grant began, "I am Petty Officer Ward, and I will be leading this SERE course. Our goal here is to prepare you for the extreme situations you may face if captured during your missions. This training is designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge necessary to survive and escape safely."

The agents listened intently, some with looks of anticipation and others with a hint of apprehension. Grant continued.

"Let's start with the survival phase." This includes the ability to find food, water, and shelter in harsh environments. We're going to give you a hands-on demonstration, so be prepared to get a little dirty.

Grant took the agents to an outdoor training area designed to simulate harsh survival conditions. He demonstrated techniques for building makeshift shelters, identifying water sources, and methods for finding food.

"The key to survival is adaptation and creativity," Grant explained as he built a makeshift shelter out of materials available in the environment. "You must learn to use what you have around you and to think outside the box."

The agents divided into groups and began practicing the techniques Grant had demonstrated. Grant circulated among the groups, offering guidance and suggestions. He corrected mistakes and praised those who were excelling.

"Excellent job building the shelter," Grant said to a group that had assembled a sturdy, well-designed shelter. "Remember, the shelter must protect you from the elements and be functional."

On the second day, the training focused on the evasion phase. Grant organized simulated pursuits and techniques to avoid enemy detection. He explained and demonstrated camouflage techniques, stealth, and using terrain to your advantage.

"Evasion is about staying out of range of the enemy and using the environment to hide," Grant explained. "You need to learn how to move discreetly and avoid leaving a trail."

Grant organized a simulated pursuit in which the agents were both "pursuers" and "evaders." He observed closely, providing feedback and adjusting strategies as needed. The agents were highly engaged and motivated to apply what they had learned.

"Well done," Grant said at the end of the simulation. "You are showing great progress. Remember, continued practice is key to perfecting these skills."

The resistance phase was addressed on day three. Grant and his team prepared a series of simulated capture scenarios in which the agents faced challenging situations that tested their ability to withstand interrogation and psychological pressure.

Grant demonstrated mental and physical resilience techniques and offered advice on how to handle high-pressure situations. He emphasized the importance of mental preparation and maintaining a positive attitude.

"Resilience is both mental and physical," Grant said. "You must be prepared to withstand pressure and psychological manipulation. Stay focused on your goals and remember that resilience is about perseverance."

The agents participated in simulated exercises and were assessed on how they handled pressure and stress. Grant provided detailed feedback and encouraged everyone to reflect on their experiences and learnings.

The final day of the course was devoted to the escape phase. Grant set up a scenario in which the officers had to plan and execute an escape from a simulated detention facility. They applied the techniques they had learned in the previous phases and worked as a team to overcome obstacles and successfully escape.

Grant observed each team closely, offering guidance and assistance as needed. He was impressed with the creativity and effectiveness of the solutions the officers came up with.

"Great job, everyone," Grant said when the simulation was complete. "You have demonstrated impressive skills and the ability to apply what you have learned in practical situations."

The agents were visibly pleased and relieved to have successfully completed the course. Many of them approached Grant to express their gratitude and appreciation.

"Petty Officer Ward," one of the agents said, "this was the best SERE training I've ever had. Your knowledge and skills are truly impressive."

Another agent agreed. "Yes, the training was exceptional. We learned a lot from you and are much better prepared to handle any situation that may arise."

After the course was completed, Grant met with Captain to discuss the agents' feedback and the impact of the training.

"Grant," Captain began, "the CIA agents gave us extremely positive feedback on the training. They praised the clarity and effectiveness of your teachings. It's clear that you made a significant difference to them."

Grant smiled, a little proudly. "I'm glad to hear that. It's been a pleasure to share my knowledge and help prepare these agents for future challenges."

Captain continued, "The Navy is very proud to have you as its leader. Your performance and dedication are a shining example of what our SEALs stand for. Keep up the great work."

Grant thanked him and replied, "I appreciate it, Captain." I will continue to strive to maintain the highest standards and contribute in the best way possible.

SERE training was a success and left a lasting impression on CIA officers. Grant was pleased with the positive impact it had and the opportunity to share his knowledge. He knew that as he continued his career with DEVGRU, he would continue to seek ways to enhance his skills and contribute to the safety and success of his missions.
