Chapter 13: Transfiguration

Wade had initially thought that with the correct guidance, most spells should be easy for them to master. However, that was not the case; the level of one's magical abilities ultimately depended on individual talent.

For simple spells, such as the Cleaning Charm(Scourgify) or the Mending Charm(Reparo), there wasn't much difference when they were cast by different people.

But as the difficulty of the spells increased, Theo began to struggle. He tried the Levitation Charm(Wingardium Leviosa) over a dozen times and still couldn't quite get it right.

Ryan and Michael were doing slightly better, but their success was inconsistent. Hermione, as usual, succeeded on her first attempt, but she found it difficult to levitate heavier objects.

However, for students who had just started attending a magic school, even successfully mastering a simple spell was enough to excite them.

As they walked towards the Great Hall for dinner, Michael was still showing off to Theo:

"Did you see that last Mending Charm I cast? It was perfect! The chandelier on the ceiling immediately returned to its original state! I dare say it wasn't even that bright when it was first hung up!"

Ryan, on the other hand, was still muttering incantations while waving his wand, silently practicing spells. In a moment of carelessness, sparks shot out from the tip of his wand, nearly setting Hermione's hair on fire.

"Oh, please! Don't point your wand at people," Hermione said immediately, then asked with genuine interest, "What are you practicing?"

Her face practically said: "Come on, ask me!"

"The Levitation Charm," Ryan replied.

He had a good temperament and could sense the helpful intentions beneath the young girl's seemingly bossy attitude, so he remained calm and polite throughout.

Hermione said in surprise, "But you just succeeded earlier!"

Ryan shook his head, "I still feel like something is missing in my spell."

They arrived at the Great Hall, where a sumptuous dinner filled the air with enticing aromas, and it was only then that they realized how hungry they were.

Theo mumbled, "Merlin! I think I can eat an entire dragon right now!"

… … … … … … ...

The sense of accomplishment from mastering a spell was sweet, but the effort it took was exhausting.

After dinner, Michael finally couldn't wait to break away from the study group and arranged to play the Exploding Snap game in the common room with Terry, his roommate.

Hermione and the others returned to their common rooms to do homework, while Wade took advantage of the library's remaining open hours to borrow two books he had his eye on at noon.

In the afternoon, they had already cleaned up the practice room, repaired the desks and chairs, and placed them against the wall. The empty cabinet next to them served as a bookshelf.

Wade turned on the light and set out ink and quill.

Outside the window, the sounds of young wizards cheering and laughing could be heard, but Wade opened his book and immersed himself in reading.

"Magic Theory" — [To alter the deepest secrets at will — the source of life, the essence of the self — one must be prepared to bear the most extreme and dangerous consequences.]

"Analysis of the Principles Behind Basic Spells" — [Magic is the manifestation of a wizard's will.]

Young wizards, whether to show off among their peers or to gain powerful abilities, are often more attracted to cool, amazing spells. They are willing to spend a lot of time practicing advanced spells, while they scorn the complex, obscure, and tedious theories.

Even though "Magic Theory" is a first-year textbook, young wizards would rather learn two jinxes like "Cracker Jinx" than read such a boring book.

But Wade is different. Perhaps it's because, in his previous life, his teachers constantly emphasized that understanding the essence, grasping the principles, and mastering the rules are the keys to breaking free from endlessly varied question types.

This approach allows one to avoid rote memorization and achieve high scores without doing tons of practice problems. It also enables one to tackle novel questions with ease, which is what so-called efficient learning is all about.

In other words, to know not just the "what," but also the "why."

This learning habit made Wade, in his previous life, a "study god" in the eyes of his teachers and classmates. He went to bed early, got up early, never stayed up late, had time to play sports and games, and still ranked at the top among his peers who worked themselves to exhaustion.

In this life, Wade maintained the same habit. He believed that whether it was science or magic, and whether he had a cheat code or not, a solid foundation would undoubtedly provide significant and crucial support for his studies.

...

The Defense Against the Dark Arts class was even worse than expected.

Wade had originally heard that Professor Quirrell was an extremely intelligent Ravenclaw who taught Muggle Studies at Hogwarts a year ago. He was young, handsome, knowledgeable, and very popular with the students.

Wade thought that even if he now had Voldemort attached to the back of his head, his knowledge wouldn't have disappeared, and his class should still offer something useful.

But in reality, Quirrell just followed the textbook word for word. His speech was incoherent, and his voice was so muffled that you couldn't hear him clearly from a distance.

And if you sat closer... the overwhelming garlic smell coming off him made the nearby Slytherins grimace in pain.

Considering the situation, Wade could understand his condition—anyone with an extremely evil soul parasitizing their head would have no heart for lesson preparation.

But understanding doesn't mean accepting. By the second Defense Against the Dark Arts class, Wade had moved to the farthest corner to study on his own.

...

"Transfiguration is the most complex and dangerous spell you will learn at Hogwarts. Anyone who misbehaves in my class will be expelled and never allowed back in!"

Professor McGonagall said sternly during the Transfiguration class. With a wave of her wand, she turned her desk into a pig and then back again, leaving the students wide-eyed with amazement.

"Transfiguration is the most elegant form of magic, but to master it, you must first understand Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration... Write it down, students! Don't just sit there staring."

"—Before using the Transfiguration spell, you must first clearly picture in your mind the form you want the object to take—no stray thoughts allowed. A scattered mind will definitely lead to failure, and there are countless examples of this throughout history..."

"It is crucial to wave your wand with determination and decisiveness... When you are first learning, you must pronounce the incantation clearly, but skilled wizards can perform Transfiguration without speaking the spell..."

"Incomplete Transfiguration is irresponsible and very dangerous, especially in the case of biological Transfiguration. This relates to the three theoretical principles of Transfiguration...

If the Transfiguration fails, it can lead to extremely serious consequences. For example, a few years ago, a wizard in France...

Therefore, if a Transfiguration fails, you should immediately stop and restore the object to its original state. The incantation is "Reparifarge".

Now, practice it with me—"

Wade took notes on parchment, filling at least thirteen inches, and practiced "Reparifarge" several times before Professor McGonagall allowed them to begin practicing actual Transfiguration.

She gave each student a matchstick and instructed them to turn it into a needle. Some students loudly chanted the incantation, poking at the matchsticks, but nothing changed.

Wade didn't act immediately. A phrase he had read in a book the day before flashed through his mind—Magic is the manifestation of a wizard's will.
