[Chapter 732: Hawkeye]
William White didn't go to the office that day -- not that it mattered much; his whole family had returned from Texas.
"Master, we've cleared the airport and everything went smoothly."
"Good, Tanner. Did you find out anything on that lead I asked you about?"
"Well, the Haitian gang seems to be the easiest target, but that requires darker skin."
"Huh, is the white gang really that weak? Didn't they take out two of their rivals last year? That guy with the limp -- wasn't he sent for 're-education'?"
Cough "Master, the Sicilians are more formidable. But they've leaned more toward the business side lately. By the way, some Russians have also shown up here trying to make a name for themselves."
"Russians? That's good and all, but the CIA is probably keeping a close eye on them."
"Yeah, they've been real idiots about it. Last I heard, two of them were taken out already."
William White chuckled bitterly at the thought of the Russians and Sicilians. Those two groups were going to be tricky to deal with. The Sicilians held tight to their traditions; unless a person was already involved, they'd just be allowed to hang around the fringes. As for the Russians, you'd need to be one of them to even get in with the core team.
William had plenty of people like that on his payroll; Max had dozens of members in his Alpha team. These guys could really hold their own in a scrap, that was for sure.
"Tanner, the Haitians aren't going to work. If my instincts are right, those guys primarily deal in drugs."
Cough "Well, they also moonlight as thieves, and they dare to rob soldiers."
"Their intelligence is definitely lacking. By the way, what are these Russians about?"
"Master, right now, they're only about two things: beautiful women and weapons."
"How the hell did they even get those into this country?"
"Honestly? It's pretty simple. Without detailed intel, you can't intercept their shipments."
"I get it; go talk with Max about this. It's got to be them; the black guys just wouldn't fit. Their features would make them too obvious."
"Alright, master. Those guys' hearts are going to ache."
"Heh, just check it out. The Alpha team has disbanded; see if we can scoop up some training teams."
"Got it. I'll arrange that right away."
William White realized that while his security company could defend well, going on the offensive wasn't quite as effective. To put it simply, the targets were substantial.
Hawkeye -- that was the name given to this crew. The line from Mission: Impossible fit here too: If you got caught, we'd deny everything.
As for controlling the situation -- it was clear that even without his help, these guys could carry out their missions just fine. If they lacked that skill, they wouldn't have been able to call themselves the Alpha team.
In terms of loyalty? That wasn't even up for discussion. They only cared about profit, and he kept their families well looked after, so naturally, he expected good returns. Besides, William White had no intention of becoming a kingpin; these issues weren't a problem for him.
...
Athena pouted, watching as her dad cradled her baby sister, Hebe. Well, her dad couldn't handle the two; he was also holding her hand with the other.
Turns out, being the son of a wealthy man didn't come with sweet rewards. William White knew he was simply a guy without principles. If he spoiled that bunch of kids, they'd end up being a tearful mess.
"Athena, you're a big girl now. Stop acting childish; look, your little brothers are going to laugh at you."
Athena rolled her eyes. Actually, she wasn't really upset. Her mood was good; she was just feeling a bit jealous. And her brothers? She didn't care about them at all. Those little guys were scared of her; she was a classic big sister monster.
"Daddy, you haven't been to see me in a long time. I want a gift."
"Ah, your daddy's been busy. And as for gifts, everyone gets one."
"Daddy, Daddy, we want to go to Disneyland! The one in Tokyo!"
Cough, cough "Well, my sweet daughter, they've added a lot here. It's not the dump it used to be."
"You sure?" Athena asked, doubt written all over her face. She'd been to both Disneyland parks and knew the Los Angeles one wasn't the best.
"Oh come on, sweetie, this park is owned by your dad. Don't you think? If they don't make this place as good as Tokyo, I'll fire them."
"Fine, we'll go here first, but we're still going to Tokyo."
Seeing her nod, Michelle Reis and Suzuki had no choice but to roll their eyes. You hardly ever heard a "no" coming from him, especially when it came to his daughter. He was all about pampering her.
Of course, William didn't see it that way. His daughter loved Disneyland -- that was just fine. If she preferred Universal Studios or Warner World, that would be a whole different mess.
The kids scurried off to play, each eager to inspect their gifts and check out their rooms.
The kids had quite a bit of independence, especially with Suzuki's guidance. They were occasionally wild in front of their dad, but most of the time, they behaved.
This odd family dynamic drew little attention from outsiders. Anyone who dared to cross them had been dealt with. The media moguls didn't think about going head-to-head either.
The key was that William White had a pretty thick skin.
...
Meanwhile, in his absence, his subordinates were starting to feel overwhelmed.
"What? Undercover? Tanner, that idea isn't exactly sound."
"Max, why not? Master's idea isn't bad at all. You know, some situations aren't something we can handle ourselves."
"Mr. White's idea?"
"Duh, these guys have abilities but wouldn't fit in with us. It would draw too much outside attention."
"Come on, Tanner, they've got too much bloodlust. If they take on too dirty of jobs, they're likely to get wiped out."
"Seriously? Not so righteous now, are we?"
"Look, you know about 8.19. If those guys hadn't disobeyed orders, the Russians might still be breathing."
"That can't be right; isn't a soldier's duty to follow orders?"
"Exactly! They do have their own sense of right and wrong."
"Honestly, Max, if they get taken out, who cares? It's just a sign."
"Are you sure? We can skip telling Mr. White."
"Pfft, master hates people like that too. Let's make a plan first; we'll show it to him once we're ready."
"Alright, that sounds fine."
Tanner didn't need to worry about what the master thought. To William White, the people dealing in drugs deserved their fates. Anyone forcing women into immoral activities was nothing short of vile. If those guys crossed William, they wouldn't be getting a happy ending.
What? A saint complex?
No way! The American scene had seen many gangs, and if you didn't keep an eye on them, they wouldn't regard you. To put it bluntly, dealing with those people without proper investigation was criminal. From a management perspective, your guilt was even greater.
William White found it quite ludicrous; Los Angeles was a certified circus. Blacks, Latin, Sicilians, even Koreans and Chinese were making their rounds.
Now, they had added a bunch of Russians to the mix. Most gangs were divided by race, and it was all just absurd.
What truly astonished him was how those folks' targets were predominantly their own people. At least the Sicilians still held some values.
What happened to the idea of banding together for warmth? How could they even call themselves a community?
Why didn't the FBI and CIA clamp down on these guys? Sure, they wanted a piece of the action, but they preferred to let these gangs fight it out among themselves. A united front would pose a real problem.
Why was Los Angeles so overrun by the black gangs? That's because they stuck together like glue. While they couldn't take on the Koreans, they were still a hard nut to crack. If they could, they'd rather let them battle it out.
