Sun Xiaofang quickly turned around, but saw nothing—there were only the contiguous shadows cast by the eaves continuously stretching to the end of her view.
It was nearing twilight and the sky had gradually darkened. The streetlights were not yet lit, and the pitch black of night was slowly covering the land of the city.
Families were beginning to prepare dinner, with wisps of white smoke curling up, and the scent of food wafting out of windows. Children, heeding the calls of adults, emerged from their nearby hide-and-seek spots, cheering as they ran home.
...But this homely, lively scene seemed unusually distant from the street they were on now, the vague sounds and smells were coming from a few streets away, which instead highlighted the cold and quiet of this alley.
They had not intended to walk along here, it was merely an unusually quiet road that people rarely lived on and happened to be on the way home—that was all.
