Actually, it's quite easy to spot. Normally, those who carry Immortal Qi are surrounded by its swirling presence, protected either by a Home-protecting Immortal or a family altar's Immortal.

Yet this old man clearly carried only a trace of it, which was evidently muddy and impure. That he came out to ask around almost certainly meant this was the issue.
