Zatanna the Magic

Serenora was bustling.

Lights, people, smiles and giggles echoed throughout the place. Hope was prominent and happiness was at an all time high.

It felt like a dream, a wild one.

No one had ever expected Gotham to house a place that could give people hope or happiness, but here it was.

Serenora, the place of serenity and hope.

People came rushing in with the hopes for a new beginning.

A new beginning in a new district.

Serenora did not differentiate between people and if someone had a dream that seemed plausible to turn into a reality –Serenora welcomed them.

For the first time people intentionally came to Gotham.

And there was someone that watched it all with a smile on his peaceful looking face.

"There you are."

He heard the voice, but did not turn. Instead he kept staring at the small business owners moving the boxes of cartoons.

Sitting on the roof of the shopping complex, he had been observing the people working to their fullest. He loved seeing the happy expression that they carried as they were starting the new chapter in their life.

"I had been looking for you."

Zatanna had recently finished gathering members for her circus and she was going to reveal them on her first show.

However, that show was postponed till the time everyone settles down and it was going to take another two weeks at the least.

But after a wait of so long and seeing everything that she hoped for coming together, two weeks seemed like nothing to her.

She was contented but above all else, she was indebted to the man sitting peacefully.

"They look happy." He finally spoke.

Zatanna put on a smile that stemmed from seeing the man happy.

"It's all you," She said. "It is because of you that they have found a place that they can call home. A place that they belong to."

He knew what she meant, after all, he had felt the same in the past. He had built everything from scratch and that reminded him of the hopes and dreams he had.

He started just like them, moving cartoons filled with things they made with their hard work.

"Ivy said she found a few things that could help in detoxification." She said, walking closer to him. "So, she has been keeping herself shut in the laboratory till she can make it concrete."

"I hope she doesn't push herself too much."

At his statement she immediately shook her head, "I should ask that from you. You haven't even slept in a long time."

And that he hadn't.

He was nearing a week of no sleep.

"I told you that my powers allow me to function without sleep."

She immediately countered, "And you also said that you prefer to sleep as it helps to relax."

"Let me make sure that everyone is settled and I will sleep." He said, which made Zatanna frown.

"No," She said, "That will take forever and besides that is something that they have to do themselves. You did everything that you had to, so please rest."

Jasper was many things, but being self aware about his bodily needs was not a part of it.

And while it was true that he could survive without sleep or food, it was always nice to enjoy those things.

Which Jasper wasn't.

"You sound worried about me," Jasper joked, unaware that the other person wasn't going to take it as one.

"That is because I am." She said, surprising him. "You have done everything for me, and I have done nothing."

"That is not true."

"It is." She said, sounding saddened, "I know you said I can always pay back after the circus is a success but it doesn't change the fact that I am useless to you. You can always make money with your business and this circus is not something that you necessarily need."

Jasper sighed and finally turned around, deciding to finally get off the place.

"Zatanna," He said, "The circus is not a favor, it is an investment. And you know it just as well as I do that it is not money that I want from you. You have something far grander than money."

He walked close to her, "You are magic itself. And that magic is what I need."

"Why?" She did not believe, "Your powers seem stronger than mine. You can do whatever I can but better." She felt defeated, "Then why? Why do you need me? What can I even do that makes me valuable to you?"

Jasper for a long time stared at her, trying to understand why she was feeling so tense.

Well, he knew the reason. But it still made him a little sad to see her searching for validation despite being gifted in so many ways.

"You helped me when I lost everything and everyone." She said, "You were there for me. You helped me with rent, job and even my moral dilemma."

"And you earned it all," He said, meaning his words, "When you stood by my side in the fight three months ago."

That had cemented her stance and her loyalty in his mind. By going against both Joker and the heroes –she pretty much had cut ties from both the side of the heroes and the famous villains.

She stood by his side when he had nothing and that was enough for him to view her with respect.

"That…" She wanted to say something but just wasn't sure what she could say.

"I never really said 'Thank You' for that," Jasper said, realizing his mistake.

His face softened as he looked at Zatanna.

"Thank you." He said in an honest tone, "Thank you for standing by me."

But to that, he got the most insane reply.

"Shut up."

Zatanna didn't waste a second as after she said that, Jasper felt a soft impact on his lips –making his eyes widen in shock.

Because the reply to his thank you, was a kiss on his lips.

A kiss by Zatanna Zatara, the Mistress of Magic.
