"I... well, I talk a lot with other Duelists from other shelters, so I even know about creatures that aren't Aldness Region," Kaito replies, trying to disguise his surprise at having revealed this information.

Kaito knows that there is a remote possibility that this hooded person also knows about the Shadow Guardians, so he chooses not to deviate from the subject, he just chooses to lie.
