Chapter 69

"We've arrived," Korra said, stopping the group from walking.

Looking at the horizon, Chen moved his head left and right. It was hard to see. So he activated his extra senses. He could feel a group of little foxes looking at his group from different directions. Once Chen moved his head in the direction of one of them, the foxes ran toward the library. It was a wonder that his group seemed to be clueless about what was happening, except for Lin, who was looking left and right.

"You can feel that too?" Chen asked, still following the foxes with his heat vision.

One of the foxes went to a hidden tunnel under the sand.

"Hard to feel through the sand. But don't worry. Just little foxes playing around." She replied.

"These foxes are spirits," Chen said. "They'll tell their masters about us… too late."

Chen extended his hand to the nearest person who was next to him, who happened to be Tarrlok, and he pushed him. Tarrlok fell on his butt and looked at Chen with wide-opened eyes.

A blue lightning armour covered Chen from head to toe as he crossed his arm.

*Rumble*

In that instant, a lightning bolt descended from the sky. It hit Chen, and it didn't touch him thanks to the rules of nature, which don't allow the same charged lightning to collide.

As the lightning armour vanished, Chen looked up. "We have a company, guys. So, this is what Raava called, the old Lightning Sparrow."

A blue gigantic bird appeared flying in the sky, its wings were so long. Around its blue feather, danced sparks of lightning of different colours. If he had to compare its size to something, it would be a couple of airships.

Everyone looked up. Korra's eyes lit up in a white glow while Chen's pupils turned red.

"Looks like that phoenix Asshole," said Korra, clenching her teeth.

"I bet they're brothers," Chen said. "But this one is associated with lightning."

"I've heard you like using lightning, from my brother." Said the sparrow, moving his wings down. "We were expecting you, Dragon Avatar and Raava's. But I see you have extra people with you. Well, you'll all meet at one place, which is the nirvana circle. My brother will wait for you, Dragon's Avatar."

Chen nodded his head slightly toward Tarrlok and Amon, hinting for them to make a move.

Amon opened his eye widely while Tarrlok extended his hand toward the giant creature. Both of them were able to bloodbent many people at the same time, in Amon's case, hordes of large animals. Their combined effort should deal with gigantic spirits such as that sparrow.

The sparrow moved its wings slowly. "Amazing. You are trying to control the mortal liquid within this body." It still could flap its wings, but it seemed to find difficulty in doing so. "Luckily, I'm not alone."

A compressed air passed by anyone, and it hit a spot near Amon and Tarrlok, sending them flying to the sides.

Everyone turned their head as they heard the ground crack.

A small tower revealed itself from the sands of the desert.

A two meters tall woman with a red eye pattern on her forehead appeared. Next to her, the lavabender, which Chen had killed, jumped over the top and landed. Its eyes were golden now while a fire-like aura danced around his body.

The lavabender should be dead.

However, he'd been revived and possessed by a spirit.

The combustionbender girl looked coldly down and said. "These two are blood benders. Someone like them fought Avatar Aang. But he couldn't bend him in his Avatar state."

"I get it." Said the lavabender, his voice different. His eyes glowed up in golden colour as he walked forward.

"You two are going to die." Amon extended his hand forward. The large woman froze and her body was twitching, while the lavabender seemed to be fine. He dashed forward toward Amon, and he extended his hand. A beam of yellow flame headed toward Amon.

Kuvira, who was on the side, jumped and extended her hands. The metal straps around her armour moved and shifted their shapes, creating a plate that spans in front of Amon, which took the hit from the fire.

At the same time, Korra extended her fingers to the sky. A gigantic lightning beam left her fingers, hitting the bird, who scoffed a mocking laugh.

The lightning danced around the sparrow, seeming to get absorbed. "I'm the lightning sparrow. You think that would work." The sparrow then waved his wings, sending lightning bolts flying in Korra's direction. She was too slow to avoid. She took the hit directly. However, she raised her hand, and directed her index and middle finger back to the sky, releasing the lightning bolts. That's right. As the Avatar, she has the experience of all the previous avatars, including Aang, who had learnt how to redirect lightning.

Korra then extended her hands forward, a fire vortex flew from her hands, large enough to burn a large-scale land. The sparrow, like any spirit, was very fast moving and managed to make a distance as he flew to the sky, before waving his wings down, directing a bunch of lightning bolts down. Korra barely dodged as the bolts missed. Chen on the other hand took a lightning bolt with an opened chest and absorbed it to refresh his energy.

"Korra, leave this one to me. You go and help the others." Chen said. Although he was looking up, he could see how the battle was going.

Kuvira and Lin were helping fight against the lavabender, who was turning the sand into a glass while shooting golden flames at them.

On the other hand, the combustionbender girl was a huge bitch — literally and figuratively. She wouldn't allow his group to make a move without threatening to blow them into pieces. Luckily, Tarrlok was managing to bend her head and change the direction of her attacks. But that wouldn't last before the lavabender avatar interfere and shoot flame and glass at him. Amon had a hard time as well.

It meant that they needed Korra to help.

Asami, on the other hand, was doing so well. With her Chi control, although as not as good as his, she could hold onto her own. She had increased her speed and was dodging very well while heading to the combustionbender. Maybe Asami can win that.

"You take care of the Lavabender. I, on the other hand, should be the best counter to the lightning sparrow. Lightning can't hurt me."

Against an enemy who could shoot lightning, Chen wouldn't worry about losing energy.

Chen extended his hand to the left and floated. He used weaponizing. A purple fire extended from his hand, forming the sickle. The blade of the sickle took the shape of a grey flame, which should burn even the ashes. Chen didn't dare to use that flame to create the grip, since it could burn him too.

"Alright." Korra nodded, a vortex of wind forming below her feet and lifting her to fight with the others.

Chen flew to the sky and headed to the large creature, who could eat him as if he was warm.

"You don't fear death, human. My brother was right to doubt that you are immortal." Said the sparrow. "But you are stupid to come to me."

The sparrow stretched its wings. Purple lightning started moving in a circle around it, creating a very strong light. Chen found that he had to close his eyes as it was very bright.

"Now, let's see if you can see this, human." It then waved its wings. The lightning gathered and fell on Chen.

Since he had foreseen that, Chen increased his speed and flew up. The lightning that hit him was absorbed into his body. In no time, Chen had blue sparks dancing around him, and he moved at an imaginable speed, appearing above the lightning sparrow.

He then waved his fire sickle, the large blade digging deep within the head.

A red vapour flew from the head of the spirit. It was the blood. Chen looked at the spot he waved his weapon at. It didn't even have a burned spot.

The bird howled in pain. Lightning danced all around its gigantic body, crawling on Chen's body.

"Thanks for the energy."

Chen stabbed the sicked deep. Using <<Lightning Dash>> to boost his movement speed, he ran toward the tail. The sickle vanished into thin air. As Chen was falling to the ground, the body of the bird fell. The wound spots had red vapour raising from them.

Chen landed on his feet. Raising his head, he looked at the falling gigantic body. He took a step to the side, and the 2 buildings' bodies fell. The impact made the sand rise, covering the view.

Just at that moment, Asami sneaked behind the large woman. She jumped and wrapped her neck around the firebender, closing her grip. The contusion bender fell, losing her consciousness.

At the same time, Korra was doing so fine against the lavabender, who couldn't bend lava. Against the Avatar who has the experience of all her previous lives, he had no chance but to get defeated.

The lavabender had the ability to regenerate it seemed. Korra had

"Brother…" Yelled the lavabender, extending his hand toward the sparrow, who seemed to be breathing his last.

"Guess we lost." Replied the sparrow. "You would reincarnate. As for me. I will just die… well, It's not bad. I'll take it as if it was a nap, a very long endless one."

Chen walked to the lightning sparrow, patting him. "How about we make a deal."

"A deal, with you? Are you mocking me?"

"You want to live, don't you," Chen said. "I know you guys had been deceived by the owl and the dragon." He then looked at the lavabender. "There's another part of the story of which you don't know. The dragon had given me his power deliberately to fight Vaatu. When we did it, he backstabbed me. So, I threw his power away, and I used the lightning to scare him."

<<You fucking shameless lying bastard>> said a voice in Chen's head.

"Hold on. That means it's true. Humans can take our power." The sparrow said. "What you say, phoenix."

"We aren't dying in vain. When I raise from the ashes again, I'll seek a solution." Said the spirit inside the lavabender.

By the context, Chen could assume that it was the phoenix he'd fought earlier.

"Not if you aren't willing," Chen said. "You can lend me your power by possessing me. I can't force you to do that. I had sought the dragon for help, and I think the spirits in your world should know the story."

The sparrow, with a weak voice, said. "Damn it. That fraud Dragon had tricked us. I knew he was prideful, but to cause a massacre because he's too pride to admit defeat… He… he deserves death."

Chen's chest suddenly shone. A pattern of an eastern dragon appeared, creating a red glow.

"Brothers. Don't misjudge me. It's my fault." Came the dragon's voice from Chen's head. "It's Vaatu's effect on my mind. I and this gentleman had a noble goal when we fused. But Vaatu managed to use his evil dark power to corrupt my mind. Now that I fused with him again, I'm full mind."

Chen almost caught blood when he heard the voice.

'The fucking lying bastard. He's too shameless to admit anything.'

"Is that so?" the sparrow asked.

"Yes." Chen nodded. "The dragon was honest with me when he fused. It didn't make sense to turn against me at the last moment. Must be Vaatu."

<<That's right. Play along.>> echoed the dragon's voice in Chen's head.

"So, guys here's my deal." Chen sat down. "I can save the sparrow's life. The only way for that, however, is for him to try to possess me. He'll heal inside of my soul."

"But won't you die?"

"Don't worry. I can't use your power without your will." Chen said.

<<And you call me a shameless lying bastard>>

"Guess it's worth trying." The sparrow said. "Unfortunately, I can't move. Can you touch my head, the one above my neck?" he chuckled at the last part.

"Can I try that? I mean, fusing with you guys?" Asami asked, looking at the Lavabender, who looked away and shook his head.

"You know that Chen won't kill you, knowing that you are tricked." Asami rolled her eyes and frowned. "Also, if you fuse with me, the spirits inside the library won't know about your betrayal and won't attack you."

Asami had always known that Chen was lying with his story. He'd already told her that the dragon hadn't landed Chen power, and he'd discovered the trick in the middle of death and life experience. The spirit can only leave the body if the host lost most of his energy.

"I don't know." The phoenix said. "But if you die, it's on you."

"I've seen you during the fight. You don't die."

"Chen, how do you fuse with these things?" Asami asked.

"Just open your chakra points and circle the foreign energy until it becomes one with your Chi, before closing the chakra in your stomach," Chen replied.

"I can do that," Asami said, looking at the lavabender and smiling. "I'm finally becoming a bender."

"Sure." Chen extended his hand. Once his hand fell on the sparrow's head, the sparrow started fading, getting absorbed into Chen's hand.
