Clarke woke to the feeling of soft little fingers gently touching the scar on her leg left by the bear trap that she had been fooled to fall into. Madi opened her eyes wide open before she smiled when she noticed that Clarke had awoken under her touch.
Looking at the little girl who had attacked her a few weeks ago, made Clarke smile at her. Yes, Madi did attack them, but she was scared after being left alone for months after he family has been caught in the death wave.
"I didn't want to wake you."
The little girl looked at Clarke, with tears threatening to fall on her checks, fearing that she might have hurt the older girl.
Yes, Madi did wake her up, but that wasn't a problem since it was almost afternoon, so because of that, Clarke decided to stop Madi from continuing her pointless apology, especially since there was nothing wrong with it. The past two and half weeks were quite strange for Clarke, mostly because she and Leon had become foster parents for the little girl that they found. At first, Madi was against this idea, but after she saw Leon looking at her almost as if he was going to eat her, the little girl reluctantly accepted. She still refuses to be anywhere near Leon and mostly stays with Clarke, but from time to time, she would join or follow Leon outside to hunt or fish.
"Does it still hurt?"
"Not anymore, but I still can't put all that much pressure on it. I believe that I would have to use a crutch for a while before I would be able to properly walk. But you don't have to worry about it Madi, I don't hate you."
As she spoke, Clarke ruffle Madi's hair making the little girl smile in delight from the sudden affection.
"By the way have you and Leon eaten today?"
Before the girl could open her mouth to answer, her stomach gave the response rumbling loudly, it was almost comical as Madi frowned looking down at her stomach, as if she just got betrayed by her own body.
"You should have eaten if you are this hungry."
"I wasn't hungry before, and I don't like him…"
"Now, Madi, don't say that. Leon's not a bad guy, he's just… he doesn't like when his friends are hurt. I've told you before what he had done for us, no?"
Madi nodded at Clarke, still trying to believe what the older girl told her about the boy who caught her without a problem. While Leon hadn't done anything to hurt her, every time she was near him, she feels as if a dangerous beast was watching her, waiting for any small mistake to strike and get rid of her.
"He's scary, Clarke. Every time I follow him outside, I see him easily taking down one of the beasts. It's surreal. That's something that usually needs five hunters, but he… he can do it by himself…"
Just as she was about to continue, Madi's whole body freeze in fear as she hear footsteps behind. Not even a second later, the little girl runs and hides behind Clarke trying to make herself as insignificant as possible.
'I don't know why she fears me like that since I don't remember hurting her. Then again, I wasn't exactly the friendliest guy when we met Madi for the first time.'
Seeing that he stop walking and was looking at Madi, Clarke signaled Leon with her head to leave the food over so that she and Madi could eat.
"How's your foot ?"
"It's getting better, Leon. Thanks for the food."
"Don't worry, princess. Make sure that our little friend here eats something as well. See you two later."
Right as Leon turn to leave, he heard a low voice thanking him. He stopped for a second smiling back at Madi before leaving them to eat in peace. As soon as he left the room, Madi turns attention to the plate of food, excited to finally eat something.
While she didn't know what this strange-looking thing was, Madi still choose to eat it once she saw Clarke taking a bit out of it.
"What is that?"
"Omelet with roasted vegetables, one of Leon's favorite breakfasts."
Once she saw just how satisfied Madi seem eating her breakfast, Clarke let out a tired sigh, after all, this might have been the first time, Madi actually seem to enjoy something made by Leon. A few seconds later, she smiled in relieve, mostly because Madi shouted for Leon to bring her a second portion.
"How can this be so good? I've eaten something similar before!"
"Maybe, but I doubt you ate an omelet made with Pterodactyl eggs. You will find many different kinds of seasoning or eggs and all of them taste different. "
"Mmhh noted."
Madi nodded seemly understanding what Clarke told her, before laying on her back, looking up at the ceiling.
"Hey, Clarke…"
"Hmm?"
"Would you and Leon leave one day?"
As soon as she heard Madi's question, Clarke hugged the little girl, bringing her closer to her chest. Even though this wasn't the first time Clarke saw Madi looking so sad, it was still the first time, the little girl ask this particular question. Despite what happened, Clarke had started to like this little girl, and while Leon didn't say anything, she knew that he would also protect Madi and stay by her side.
"No. I promise you this Madi. Neither Leon nor I would leave you alone. We will always be here for you, no matter what would happen."
The rest of the day passed without any incident, at least that's how it felt. Clarke felt bad and unsettled unable to actually do anything at the moment thanks to her injury, and while Madi would stay and talk with her, Clarke still felt bored doing nothing but wasting her time.
While Clarke and Madi were sorting some of the berries and vegetables that Leon gathered earlier that day, the boy in question was watching in horror something that he wished to never see ever again.
