Sitting opposite, Emily Winter unscrewed the cap of her soda and took a sip: "We ordered two plates of tripe, and I only had two bites. Lola's been on her phone the whole time. Did the dog eat the rest?"

Even with his mouth feeling spicy and sweating, his chopsticks never stopped: "I'm sitting next to Lola, and I keep picking things out for her. I'm not eating it all."
