Gacha and Death?

Finch watched as the prompt closed. He took in the gentle atmosphere of the forest around him. The redwood trees were native to Vanahiem and there were much larger trees in this realm than the redwoods. Finch looked up at the towering giants and his smile grew slightly.

He ran his fingers across the tree, feeling the coarse bark at his fingertips. It felt great. His fingers were dark green and they had the texture of bark. But he was not bulky like the ents or Leshen creatures that are normally depicted in fantasy. He was slim, almost humanoid. He only differentiated from humanoid and demihuman races by the fact that his skin was dark green like a goblin. He also had small blooming buds across his body and there was a gentle gleam of starlight which shone like veins across his skin. He had a canopy of leaves sprouting up over his head from his back and shoulders like a normal tree would, but other than that he looked like a mysterious tree-human hybrid.

He didn't really put too much effort into designing his character. It didn't look too far different from humanoids and demi-humans. He knew he would die within 3 hours anyway, so what was the point. He walked a few steps along the edge of the redwood, running his fingers across it. Another prompt opened after he had only taken a few steps.

Finch thought for a few moments but didn't really care again. He used the same lazy naming technique he used for his race and combined his real name, the word tree, and his race. (Tree + Finch) = (Treech Worsap)

Please choose your first class and job.

Please note, that not all jobs are shown and some require special conditions to use.

Finch expanded the list of class and job options and looked through them. There weren't as many as he had expected. He noticed that the only available magic classes he could select were [Astromancer] and [Druid]. Perhaps these were the perks of his racial class affinities? Or is it a restriction that he couldn't choose other classes?

Finch didn't think too much and just chose the [Astromancer] class near the top of the alphabetical list.

He then went through the [Job] list and chose [Herbalist].

========***++++***========

Congratulations on selecting your name, [Treech Worsap], your class [Astromancer], and your job [Herbalist].

You now have access to your class and job skills in the game.

From this moment, your adventure begins!

The prompt closed and now he could view the HUD of Yggrasil in its entirety. Each window had a gothic-styled frame surrounding it. He took a look at each of the windows one by one: the bottom right was a map of the area, the top right was a timer synced with the real world, and the bottom left showed the console commands, chat logs, friends list, etc, and finally, the top left showed his Health, Mana, and Level.

*Heteromoph Player Notice*

Hello player,

This is a tutorial message on heteromorphic races. Heteromophs are highly restricted in many areas of Yggrasil and may not enter certain cities. You as a heteromorph, are considered a monster player. This extends many restrictions to you across the game and other races, Humanoids, and Demi-humans won't have any penalty when killing you. It is often encouraged for Humanoids and Demi-humans to eliminate Heteromorph players and you will find yourself in difficult situations.

But don't fret. Heteromorphic players have increased skill point gain per level and additional racial abilities which the other races do not have.

All things are balanced, as they should be.

Regards,

The Yggdrasil Team

Another notice popped up next to this one, indicating he had received a heavy suppression debuff.

========***++++***========

[Heteromorph Suppression] is in effect while in Vanahiem.

[Effect]: Item drop rate and loss rate significantly increased. Higher-value items will be lost more often.

========***++++***========

Finch read over the notices before closing them. He didn't really care, he wasn't planning on playing the game seriously. He walked around for 20 mins, touching the plants and scooping the dirt up in his hands. He watched a few large bird creatures fly overhead, teal-colored rabbits scatter into their burrows, and chromatic bees gathering honey inside a hollowed area, halfway upside a redwood tree.

He sat on the ground softly and dug his fingers into the dirt. The light sense of touch was nice. The technology for Yggrasil only allowed for a light sense of touch, it couldn't mimic smells or sounds very well. But Finch could enjoy himself peacefully with just this sense of touch.

He paused for a while, meditating on the peace within himself, before turning back to look at the HUD again. He was surprised he felt interested in this game. He really had been dragging his feet, with his heart dead, for so long in the real world. The feeling he had now, was freeing. He opened his character page from the HUD.

(Author's note: Most of this was done from me inferring things from the Overlord Wiki and my own interpretation of the game. Max levels for each of these are only 15. And heteromorphs would gain 6 stat points on each level up. This is double what a humanoid player would get in exchange for racial weaknesses. From there, the player can spend stat points to increase racial levels, class levels, job levels, or directly increase their stats. In this way, all things refer to the player's customization and balance. One player cannot do everything masterfully. But if you were crazy enough, a player could take 600 classes all at level 1 with all their stat points.)

Finch looked over all the information quietly as he let dirt slip through his dark green fingers. He was slightly confused about most of the information, but he didn't spend too much time thinking about it. Instead, shifted into a flashback of himself playing Total War games as a kid.

He had forgotten that he played them with his friends and had smiled so often back then when his parents were still alive. And when he still had his childhood to play with and wonder in life.

He sighed and closed the menus. He glanced at the game timer in the top right of the screen. An hour had already passed since he joined the game. He doesn't have much time left.

A prompt appeared in front of Finch's vision again as he was staring into space. He read through the message advertising the pay-2-win 'features' of the Gachapon.

'A Gacha huh? It has been a long time' Finch thought to himself. He clicked the link to the cash shop and it opened up in another menu on his HUD.

Finch looked down over all the items in the Cash Shop Gachapon. It looks like the developers really want to take as much money as possible from their players.

'I have no clue on how good some of these are. Well... it's been a long time since I played a Gacha. Might as well...' Finch entered in the Gacha input box that he would like 100,000 rolls!

Immediately he saw his in-game balance drop to 15k and he watched as a wheel spun around and landed on different squares. He watched it land on [Quick -Change Item] and [Carrion baby] 3-4 times in a row.

He scooped up some dirt into his hands and let it slip through his fingers again, watching the wheel turn over and over again. After only 3 minutes, he got bored of watching it and selected the option to quickly finish all his 100,000 rolls without the 'unboxing' effect of his Gacha.

He didn't even care to look at what he got, but his inventory was filled up about halfway in his item slots. He closed out of the Cash Shop tab.

'That... was boring.' He shook his head. He thought gambling in the Gacha might make him feel some excitement again like when he was a kid or when he first took interest in Yggdrasil. But it didn't.

He got up and strolled around the redwood tree some more, waiting for his time to come. He thought about his time in life, his childhood, and his friends. He remembered LAN parties with his friends. He remembered they joked about him going pro in strategy games, with how well he microed his units.

So many thoughts went through his mind. It is funny that the closer you are to death, the more you seem to have your life flash before your eyes. Why is it that we remember things at our time of death?

2 more hours passed and the time was now only a few minutes away for the suicide serum to destroy his brain completely. Finch could already feel a fogginess in his mind and he knew he didn't have much time left.

'So... this is the end. Huh.' Finch held a twig in his green hands and played with it. His vision slowly went dark.

"Hey! I found a 'hetertic' player!" A man shouted near Finch. A few other humanoid players came out of the brush nearby.

"Aw is he sleeping? Why would he sleep in-game? Treech, are you there?" Another man in full plate mail says.

"Do you think we get his items when he dies? The HUD mentioned there is no penalty for PKing." Another man in thief garments asked slyly.

"True! " The man in plate mail agreed. He lifted his sword and charged an attack skill.

"See you in the afterlife monster scum" He smiled and brought down his sword. The damage was heavily reduced by Finch's race's naturally high defenses.

"What the hell? My damage is so low. What is this guy's race? Such high defense." The man spat with a surprised, but a despicable expression.

A mage-looking woman threw a firebolt at Finch and it dealt him 1 damage. But Finch still didn't do anything. Finch couldn't even see in front of himself as his vision had already gone dark, he couldn't fight back.

"This guy is a freak! Even my magic damage was reduced by so much. How the hell? He is level 1!!" The woman screeched.

The man in plate mail tilted his head. "He seems to be having... connection issues? Let's hurry and claim his life before his connection recovers!"

The man smiled. He was pleased with his resourcefulness.

"Yes!" They both answered.

Both the woman and the thief-looking man began attacking Finch alongside the man in plate mail. They beat down Finch's character quickly and his character disappeared into a burst of light particles.

"Damn! What the hell is this overpowered race?! Such perverted defense at level 1" the thief-looking man muttered as he watched the character disappear. He quickly activated his theif ability to snatch, increasing the items stolen upon his Finch's death.

"Yes... I should report this to the clan leader. " The plate mail guy commented in response.

"HOLY SHIT!" The thief-looking man screamed as he noticed the items he stole.

Both the plate mail guy and the mage woman widened their eyes after they shared the looting game logs.

========***++++***========

[Snatch] executed successfully.

You have stolen 1x[High-class Dragon (Data Crystal)] and 1x[Shooting Star (Divine class ring)] with a [Jackpot Steal] triggered effect.

Looted [Player Treech] => Received 2x[Charn's Hourglass ]

========***++++***========

The plate mail guy immediately made a call to his clan leader. He informed him that they just made a jackpot PK for their clan. It would definitely solidify their foundation with these two items. He also had the clan mark [Treech] with a bounty for PK targeting later on... They hoped he had more cash-shop items on him the next time they find him.

Meanwhile, Finch's in-game character: Treech, opened his eyes.
