"Krista, come with me a moment," Gus said, opening his door ajar and gesturing inside.
Upon returning to the academy, he had one thing that he wanted to know. It was something that could possibly rid him of this terrible feeling he had since the library. No matter how much he tried to tell himself that he was justified in his actions, as were the others in his squad, he could not help but feel like he was wrong. It was not even what happened. It was more that it was something like that, the idea of carelessly taking lives, was something one would expect from one of the Evolved, the people he despised most in the universe.
As she entered his room, he pushed the door closed, before gesturing for her to sit on the bed.
"Tell me something. Why are you here? What pushed you to join the academy?"
Her face dropped as he asked the questions. "I am sorry. I know I was no help back there. I just… I could not bring myself to harm other people, not then at least. I am not ready to hurt others yet, not unless I can justify it to myself."
"That's not what I mean. I'm not, well, anything about your choice. We should all know why we're here, after all, who our enemy is. I wanted to ask because I was unsure about back there, myself. I mean, we killed people. I killed people, and what for? It was unsure that they were even going to hurt us, so why would it be acceptable for me to assume that they needed to die? I remembered what you said before, and I wanted to ask why you're here. I thought it might give me an insight into what you thought, which might help me justify my actions. I'm sorry if it doesn't make sense, but it's something I need."
"You were justified," she said, surprising him.
"You think so?"
She nodded. "I am here because I have family. I have three younger siblings, and each of them mean the world to me. If there is anything I can do to protect them, then I have to do it. That is why I am here. And it is also why I know what you did was right. If I was in that place with them, then I would have acted without hesitation, in order to keep them as safe as possible. I would have took no chances. And, although it is not the exact same situation, that is similar to your role for us. Regardless of yourself, you did what you had to to give us the best chances of survival."
"I think I get it, thanks Krista," Gus said. "So, three siblings?"
"Yeah. Two younger sisters, one fourteen and one eight, and a ten year old brother. Most people would probably call them some kind of demon, but for me they are the sweetest little angels…"
The next few days went by like a blur. Although his conversation with Krista helped, he still had some mixed feelings on the events that happened in the library. Those feelings took over his mind, not allowing him to focus on anything else and even causing him to not remember things he had experienced, as though they had never been stored in his mind.
It wasn't until Sunday, the third day that they had free, that Gus began to feel better about the situation that happened in the library. After all, he had been told of their danger by Frencian, so how could he not take precautions against them?
Since he had been out of sorts during the fourth day of the week, he had paid no attention during the lessons that day. Therefore, it was his first priority to catch up on what he had missed out that was important, which meant a trip to the Pit with Joel and Connor.
The reason he chose the two of them was not just for the catch up. They were the only ones who knew about the system, and for now he wanted to keep it that way. Going with the two of them gave him the chance to be free to experiment with it.
"So, what did I miss?" Gus asked. "I remember we had to do some things with weapons, but was there anything important that I didn't hear, or anything like that?"
"No, nothing else," Joel informed him.
"Although, you were shockingly bad during it," Connor said. "Shockingly bad."
"That's fair," Gus responded with a laugh.
"So, how far has your, um, Evolution come along?" Joel asked in a hushed tone, glancing around the room. There were a couple of other people there, but they were far from in earshot of the conversation. It was less crowded than it had started to get towards the end of their last session there, but there were still some people there.
"Not too badly, I'm definitely moving at a decent pace. If we keep going on missions as part of the experience protocol, I'm sure I'll be insanely strong in no time."
"So, who're you fighting first?" Connor asked. "You've got to, what was the word now? Earn your level ups? He might've been an idiot, but that William guy was right about that line."
"Actually, I want to see you two go at it first. Wouldn't be much of a leader if I didn't let those under me train as much as myself, would I?"
Gus could clearly remember their fights against William's lackeys. For Connor, this was a similar fight, and Gus was curious to see if he would change his approach to it. For Joel, it was a different type of fight to the one he had, with a weaker, more agile opponent. It would be interesting to see how he would approach this situation.
"Remember, try not to kill each other," Gus jokingly warned. "Joel, I'm talking to you."
"Doubting me already?" Connor asked, feigning hurt from his words.
Just as the two began, Gus was startled by a voice behind him.
"Mind if a couple more join you?"
