The following day Kim pulled up outside Keeper's Cottage. Just to be on the safe side, he was wearing his 1940s clothes. He got out of the car and leant back in to pick up his briefcase, then closed the door and started up the garden path.
A man came round the side of the house pushing a wheelbarrow. He was wearing wellington boots and green gardening gloves. Kim's heart sank. Johnny couldn't have been doing that well, then, if he had to employ a gardener.
Part of him was angry that they had broken the rules and had outside contact, but he could hardly blame them when they had been left entirely on their own resources all this time.
He opened the gate and started walking up the path
"Kim!" The man had dropped the handles of the wheelbarrow and was coming towards him in a loping stride. "My dear chap. How marvellous to see you. We were beginning to think you'd disappeared for good."
