He Lanjin laughed softly and looked into Qiao Hanye's eyes. The man's unfathomable dark eyes reflected her face. His eyes were so beautiful she could spend the entire night just looking at them.
Her phone suddenly rang, pulling her back to reality.
He Lanjin stared at the unknown number with a puzzled look on her face. She tapped the answer button and put the phone to her ear. "May I know who this is, please?"
"It's me!" The voice was unmistakably Lu Zifan's. He was afraid that He Lanjin would not answer any of his calls, so he got a new card to make this call. He Lanjin was about to hang up when Lu Zifan said, "He Lanjin, it must have been very hard for you to pretend all these years."
He Lanjin snickered and looked at Qiao Hanye. "What do you mean, young Master Lu?''
Lu Zifan never expected He Lanjin to be very difficult to read. He had always seen her as stupid and docile.
"He Lanjin, listen to me carefully," Lu Zifan said coldly. "You have broken up with me, but there are two parties in this relationship. As far as I'm concerned, you are still my woman. You can break up with me, on the condition that you give me back one of my men. I know you are in possession of him."
Lu Zifan never expected his assassin to fall into He Lanjin's hands.
He had been very careful, but he had never thought to take precaution against He Lanjin.
Lu Zifan should have guessed all along that it was He Lanjin who was hiding his assassin. That night, he had sent some people to the theater to "assassinate" He Lanjin. Lu Zifan would then come out of hiding and "save" He Lanjin from her "assassin" in order to win her back. However, things did not go to plan and the main assassin disappeared completely. But Lu Zifan never even imagined that he would fall into He Lanjin's hands.
"Young Master Lu, you sent such a handsome man to kill me. Not keeping him would mean my lack of appreciation for your good intentions. I didn't want to let you down." He Lanjin saw no sense in pretending not to know what Lu Zifan was up to. She wanted him to know that she now had the upper hand, and that he could not force her to do things she would not do otherwise.
"I didn't expect the young Master Lu to be such a cultured scum. How dare he do all kinds of shameless things?" He Lanjin said.
She suddenly laughed and said rather kindly, "Oh, did you know that He Ruoxue came to the disaster area to be a ghost bride? It's quite rare for someone to volunteer to be buried alive with someone who had recently died, don't you think?"
Lu Zifan was shocked. He was going to answer He Lanjin, but she had hung up the phone.
He Lanjin felt relieved, thinking that Lu Zifan was probably panicking about what to do. A bit later, news spread about how many people had come to watch as He Wenqing and the inconsolable Tang Zhilin tried to free He Ruoxue from the coffin. He Lanjin said, "We have to find a way to abolish this ugly and evil custom. Otherwise, people will continue to suffer in the future."
"Okay," Qiao Hanye answered.
He studied He Lanjin, who looked quite energetic, despite being very sick earlier. "Don't you need to go back to the room and take some rest?"
He Lanjin shook her head. "I still have a lot of things to do. I want to expose the people who pocketed the money I donated for the people here." Her intuition told her that the news she heard about a certain murder case in Jiang City had something to do with the corruption in this place.
She came here just to help with the rescue mission; He Lanjin did not know that coming here would lead to her digging up dirt that needed cleaning.
Zhao Yuyi suddenly appeared. "He Lanjin," he said quietly, not daring to look directly at Qiao Hanye. "Can you ask your friend to help me with something?"
"Sure," He Lanjin answered. "What do you need help with?"
Although Zhao Yuyi's face was fine and fair, it did not hide the pain he was feeling. "My father has been dead for a few days now, but I still haven't been able to dig his bones out. Can you ask your friend to help me extract his bones? I want to bury him in peace."
There was no way He Lanjin would refuse such a request. Besides, she had witnessed the collapse of Zhao Yuyi's home. However, she was puzzled as to why the old man did not come out of the house to save himself during the earthquake.
He Lanjin was curious. Why did the death of Zhao Yuyi's father seem rather strange?
He Lanjin nodded and called for Shangguan Zhi, Han Beicheng, and Nan Feng for extra help. "Thank you," Zhao Yuyi said, gratitude evident in his voice. He was not expecting it, but she readily agreed to help him. He Lanjin really had a kind heart.
The group of men worked efficiently. In just two hours, they had cleaned up the rubble from Zhao Yuyi's collapsed house. As they were cleaning, however, they were met by a tragic picture. Zhao Yuyi's father had been tied to a pillar, preventing him from coming out of the house...
