The celebrations continued late into the night, marking a significant milestone not just for Zhuge Liang and Lu Xun, but for all who had been part of their education in the academy. The academy's success was also a testament to Lie Fan's vision and the dedication of everyone involved, where the graduation also signifies a mark for other students in the academy that they could also become like Sima Yi, Zhuge Liang, and Lu Xun who graduates from the academy in their own way.
The next day dawned with a fresh sense of purpose for Zhuge Liang and Lu Xun. Their rooms were filled with the bustle of packing, each item carefully chosen to aid them in the journey ahead.
Zhuge Liang meticulously folded his clothes, packing them alongside scrolls, ink, and brushes. Lu Xun, similarly, prepared his belongings with the same attention to detail, making sure he had everything he needed for his studies and governance tasks.
"Brother Kongming," Lu Xun called out from his room, "shall we visit the market? There are a few more things I need to get."
Zhuge Liang nodded. "Yes, that's a good idea. I also need to pick up a few items, including a sword for self-defense. Our training with Zhongda has shown me the importance of being able to protect oneself."
The two scholars made their way to the bustling market at the center of Xiapi, where vendors called out their wares, and the air was filled with the mingled scents of spices, food, and fresh produce.
At a weapons stall, they found a variety of finely crafted swords. Zhuge Liang picked up a slender, elegant blade, testing its balance and weight. Lu Xun chose a slightly heavier sword, one that felt comfortable in his grip.
They both knew the importance of having reliable weapons, given the unpredictable nature they would face in their travels, especially Zhuge Liang who was heading toward Jing Province and needed to search for Sima Hui's residence.
"These will do nicely," Zhuge Liang said, handing over the payment to the vendor. "We may be scholars, but we must be prepared for any situation."
Lu Xun agreed. "Indeed, Brother Kongming. If it wasn't for you asking me to join you and Brother Zhongda, I think there would only be two students in the class!".
Returning to the academy, they finalized their preparations, packing their newly acquired swords. The academy grounds, which had been so familiar and comforting, now feel like it would be a memory that will be passed by in their mind.
Zhuge Liang and Lu Xun made their way to the Zhuge Clan residence, where they were warmly greeted by Zhuge Xuan. The familiar surroundings provided a sense of comfort as they settled in for their last days in Xiapi.
Gathered around a large table in the main hall, Zhuge Liang and Lu Xun discussed their departure plans with Zhuge Xuan and Lu Zhi."I think we should leave soon to make the most of the favorable weather," Zhuge Liang suggested. "How about in three days' time Uncle and Master Lu Zhi?"
Lu Zhi nodded in agreement listening to Zhuge Liang's suggestion. "Three days will give you enough time to finalize everything and say your goodbyes. The journey ahead will be long, but you are well-prepared."
Zhuge Xuan looked at his nephew with pride. "Remember, Kongming and Boyan, we are always here for you. Write to us often and stay safe."
Lu Xun chimed in, "We will, Master Zhuge. We are grateful for all the support and guidance we have received here." the table was filled with a warm atmosphere, as it was finalized that Zhuge Liang and Lu Xun would leave in three days
Meanwhile, at the Governor's Castle, Lie Fan sat at the head of the table in his office, surrounded by his trusted advisors. Jia Xu, Xun You, Chen Qun, Liu Ye, Chen Gong, Lu Su, and Sima Yi were all present as they were summoned by Lie Fan.
Lie Fan looked around the table, acknowledging each of his advisors. "Thank you all for coming," he began. "We are gathered here to discuss our next campaign, specifically against Cao Cao. The question at hand is what justification should we use to declare war on him?"
Jia Xu leaned forward, with a thoughtful expression. "My lord, if I may remind you, we possess a secret edict from the Emperor, that was sent to us several years ago, urging us to save him from Cao Cao's control. This edict provides us with a legitimate and powerful reason to declare war on Cao Cao."
Lie Fan's eyes lit up at the mention of the secret edict. "Indeed how could I forget about that! Thank you for reminding me, Wenhou. The Emperor's plea for help is a very legitimate reason. We can present our campaign as an effort to rescue the Emperor and restore his rightful authority, thus portraying Cao Cao as a usurper and oppressor."
Xun You nodded in agreement. "This edict is not only a legitimate reason but also a strong rallying point. We can unify a very large amount of young men to him our banner to take arms."
Chen Qun added, "Moreover, this will resonate deeply with those who remain loyal to the Han Dynasty. It will depict us as champions of justice, which will help in gaining support from the common people."
Liu Ye spoke up, "We can also use this edict to expose Cao Cao's illegitimacy. By highlighting the Emperor's own words, we can undermine Cao Cao's authority and paint him as a tyrant who unlawfully holds the Emperor captive."
Chen Gong chimed in, "It's crucial that we ensure the authenticity of the edict is widely known. Spreading this information through the Oriole's networks will help solidify our justification for the campaign."
Lu Su then added, "We should prepare our forces under the guise of acting on the Emperor's command. This will make our movements appear as defensive actions, reinforcing our position as the rightful protectors of the Han Dynasty and holding the Emperor in our palm."
Finally, Sima Yi, with his ever-calculating mind, said, "Our propaganda must be precise and pervasive, My Lord. This is to weaken Cao Cao's legitimacy and bolster My Lord's legitimacy, especially for My Lord's future ascension as the Emperor of the land."
Lie Fan nodded, his confidence growing with each of his advisor's input. "Excellent points, all of you," he said. "The secret edict will be our key justification. We will present our campaign as a noble endeavor to save the Emperor, even though in truth it was just another political maneuver just like what Cao Cao did."
He stood, a resolute look in his eyes. "Begin preparations immediately. Wenhou oversees the dissemination of the edict's contents to ensure it reaches all corners of our territory and beyond. Gongda, organized our forces to emphasize our defensive posture.
Both Jia Xu and Xun You take their leave after receiving their assignment, which then Lie Fan turns to the others, "Chongwan and Zijing, work on our diplomatic efforts to rally support from the common people in the central plains under Cao Cao's rule."
Lie Fan turned to Lu Su and Sima Yi. "Gongtai, ensure our logistical lines are secure and shown as logistics lines to save the Emperor. Lastly, Zhongda, coordinate with The Orioles to monitor Cao Cao's movements and gather any intelligence that could aid our justification against him."
As they left the room to carry out their tasks, Lie Fan remained seated, taking out the Emperor's secret edict from his inventory, one that he completely forgot he put there, and if it weren't for Jia Xu's reminder it would be in there forever.
He opened it and read the content of the letter, seeing how Dong Cheng pleaded for his help to save the Emperor from the clutches of Cao Cao's hand was amusing because in his eyes Dong Cheng was a person greedy for power.
He had his daughter married to the Emperor and became the Empress of Han, even though it doesn't hold much power, as the Father In Law of the Emperor he enjoyed some benefits and power due to this position.
After finishing his thought, Lie Fan clapped his hand for an Oriole member entered through the window Lie Fan gave the letter to him, telling him to give it to Jia Xu, and the Oriole member without saying any word received the letter and immediately left the room.
Three days passed by, and Zhuge Liang and Lu Xun stood at the gates of the Zhuge Clan residence, ready to embark on the journey that they wanted, and dreamed of for so long.
Lie Fan, their tutors, and friends gathered to bid them farewell, giving the two of them much needed spirit and vigor for their journey, especially Lie Fan's presence because he was very busy but still gave time to see them off.
Lie Fan stepped forward, a warm smile on his face as he addressed Zhuge Liang and Lu Xun. "Zhuge Liang and Lu Xun, this journey you are about to embark on will be challenging but also full of opportunities. Remember the lessons you've learned here apply them wisely and always stay true to your principles."
He placed a reassuring hand on each of their shoulders. "Stay strong, stay safe, and make us proud. The world awaits your brilliance."
Zhuge Xuan, Zhuge Liang's uncle, followed. "Kongming, your talents are extraordinary, but remember that humility and patience are just as important. Seek out the wisdom of others and never stop learning. Your journey is not just for yourself but for the future of our people."
Lu Zhi then addressed his favorite student, Lu Xun. "Boyan, you have shown great promise. Now, it's time to prove your worth in the real world. Stay diligent and focused, and never forget the value of integrity. You carry the hopes of your clan with you."
Cai Yong, from the side, added his own advice. "Both of you, remember that true wisdom lies in understanding people and circumstances. Be observant, be adaptable, and always strive for harmony. The path ahead may be fraught with difficulties, but with your skills and dedication, you will succeed."
After the formal words of advice, Sima Yi approached Zhuge Liang and Lu Xun privately. "Kongming, Boyan, our time together has been invaluable. Stay sharp, stay cunning, and never let your guard down. We've trained hard, and now it's time for you to apply that training. I believe in both of you."
Zhuge Liang smiled, "Thank you, Zhongda. We will remember your words and friendships that were shared together."
Lu Xun nodded, "Indeed, Brother Zhongda. You helped us to achieve this and your friendship is also a rock for us to continue to go forward and achieve what we want."
Sima Yi clasped their hands firmly. "I know you won't. Safe travels, my friends."
With final goodbyes and well-wishes exchanged, Zhuge Liang and Lu Xun entered their respective carriages, to set off on their respective journeys. With a final wave, they rode out leaving Xiapi for the first time in a long time. As the two young scholars disappeared into the distance, Lie Fan and the others watched with a mixture of pride and hope.
