Alioth loved space. Ability-wise, he was pretty average, but because of his physique that allowed him to have better comprehension, he managed to become a leading expert on space. However, wanting to go to space himself, he practiced in a variety of ways so that he would meet the requirements to go on the first mission outside the solar system.
Unbeknownst to him, he would never go back.
