I agree that the protagonist needs to be smart and that the characters need to be fleshed out and well thought. Other than that, whether he's strong from the start or is just cunning, whether he keeps to single women or not, you can do whatever you want. It's your story. When you write anything non-canon it becomes an Alternate Universe.
