In Scions of the Cruel King, the Targaryen family drama is in full swing. After Aegon’s death, Aenys took the throne, but things quickly went south. Aenys wasn’t exactly a strong leader, and it didn’t take long before the Faith rose up against him. That’s when Maegor stepped in—furious and out for blood after the murder of Eleana. He crushed the rebellion with an iron fist. When Aenys died under some pretty shady circumstances, Maegor took over as king. But even though he was ruthless, the Faith remained a thorn in his side right up until his own brutal end in 48 A.L.
Now, the story kicks off in 56 A.L., and the Targaryens are still in hot water. Jaehaerys, Aenys’s son, is holding down the fort as regent for his young cousin Vaegyl, Maegor’s son. The realm is a mess, full of uprisings and political scheming. Jaehaerys and his allies, like Gerold Westerling, are doing their best to keep the peace, but they don’t realize that Westerling and Ser Tybolt Lannister have their own plans. They’re secretly plotting to put Westerling’s grandson, Aegon, on the throne.
As Vaegyl gets closer to coming of age, things start heating up. Old loyalties are questioned, hidden secrets come to light, and the shadow of Maegor’s brutal reign still hangs over everything. The fight for the Iron Throne is just beginning, and it’s going to get messy.
