I would agree with you if it weren't for the fact that he's only mage level one. A mage who's level three will curb-stomp someone who's level one—no matter what kind of strategy they are using. At the end of the day, the challenge is a mage capability test. AKA how fast you can do it and your mana limit. Imagine if the professor asked to solve a 2*5=10, and Alex solved it by stating 7+3. Sure, you get the same result, but that's not the point of the multiplication question.
