Do what you want, it's your story, but you're being obtuse in this regard: 1- Who would question that so and so is using magic, if in westeros magic is nothing but mythology except in the North, beyond the Wall and Essos? On top of that, there is no evidence to prove that the protagonist uses magic, there goes that nerf excuse (the most one could argue here is foul play, but in the end there would be no tangible proof of anything). 2- I see you greatly underestimate the magic of a Skinchanger even a novice one: as long as there is an animal in play, be the horse the case in this matter, then no normal person would be a match for him, it's simple logic, his control over his mount is superhuman, almost perfect. He may fail in the jousting technique, but we both know that the protagonist is not bad at it, the opposite would be an excuse, he may not be the best by far in that technique, however, this is compensated by his magic, it is simple 1+1 (the second 1 being an inhuman ability). There is no comparison between what a warg can do and what a normal person can do. You have to put the power levels in order otherwise there is no way to understand it.
