I think she’s the traitor and her betrothed is controlling her actions. She’s probably more sad about sabotaging the academy because of Lith. Furthermore, I’m sure her and Nalaer want to get close to Lith because of his magical ability and the fact that he’s recognized by the Queen which all the professors know about

People naturally don’t want to bow to Others so they instinctively convince themselves that it’s their ‘heart’ that keeps them from doing bad so that way it’s something they’re deciding for themselves rather than obeying someone else. Alternately, they’re afraid of some God and that entities disciplines, or they don’t lie to themselves about their true desires but have enough sense to weigh the outcomes of their decisions and protect their peace. This isn’t my account but I’m a lot like Lith in the fact that I have practically no sympathy but I also don’t have ill intentions. I just simply don’t care what happens in the world around me. I am the definition of selfish and only care about living as peaceful a life as I can. So it’s not my ‘heart’ that restricts me but the fact that if I were to have ill intentions, I would have to face negative consequences. Like I said earlier though, I don’t have ill intentions, I just don’t care

The author wanted it to be female and so it is a female. End. Of. Story. Shapeshifting means changing your appearance not your gender. Why don’t you try enjoying the story rather than trying to push your ideals on other people not to mention the author isn’t from America, obviously, and nowhere else in the world believes in non-binary (excluding that of reptiles or amphibians)
